Hot Pursuit.
Galapagos Giant Tortoises.

Male giant tortoises are much larger and heavier than females. When they have their eyes set on a potential mate they can be quite persistent in their pursuits. Smaller more agile females can escape those approaches - if not interested - by simply "running" away. Which is what happened in this case.

Locked on target.
Blue-footed Boobie.

There are many, many opportunities to practice bird in flight photography in the Galapagos Islands. One of my favorite subjects for this are the bo***es. While it's fun to capture them just before entry into the water, when they are shaped like a missile, the moment I find personally more interesting is when they suddenly recognize a target and get ready to launch themselves into the water from high above. This often involves very sudden changes in direction, spinning around their body axis, and pretty perfect wing spreads like in this example. Bonus here was that the environmental context is preserved even with the bird filling the frame.

Galapagos Penguin.

Having these guys fly around me in the water was a definite highlight of my recent Galapagos scouting trip. And they made fun subjects to explore underwater photography with, which was entirely new to me. I have so much to learn!

As a biologist, Galapagos has always been a dream location for me, for obvious reasons. So I had pretty high expectations going into this trip. And while there were certain challenges, it's easily one of the most epic playgrounds for wildlife photographers I have ever found myself in. There is simply nothing to compare it to.

Join me in 2027 and experience it for yourself. More info available on request.

Cactus + Darwin Finch ≠ Cactus Finch.

This finch sat on a cactus to trick me into thinking it's a cactus finch. Darwin finches can be tricky to identify, but I am pretty sure this is a medium ground finch. Or not.

Galapagos Sea Lion.

Endemic to the Galapagos Islands and while common throughout the archipelago, they remain endangered and susceptible to environmental changes such as El NiƱo, which can severely impact their breeding success.

If you are a nature or wildlife photographer and regularly submit your work to contests, you know the pain points associated with doing so. Searching for contests, buried rules and requirements, keeping track of deadlines, and trying to figure out what style of images gets traction in what contest...

To alleviate the burden a little bit, I developed an app that consolidates all of this info in one place. At first I did this just for myself, hoping to automate the extraction of contest deadlines that change every year. I missed submitting on several occasions because I had lost track!

The project quickly morphed into more. Why not also consolidate winning images so it is easier to discover the styles and subject areas that win consistently? I often found it difficult to navigate contest websites, and worse, prior year winning galleries would disappear and be replaced with the most recent results, forever losing sight of history.

Once that was done, I thought it might be interesting to analyze all this data and produce a fun leaderboard that tracks photographers across contests and years. Add some weights for contest size and placement, and make it all adjustable to individual preferences - since ranking photography is a very subjective undertaking to begin with.

Well, all being said and done, naturephotocontests.info was born. And it would be a shame to just keep it for myself. So now it's out there for everyone to use. For free. I hope some of you contest photographers will find it helpful and fun to use.

If you do try it out, DM me with feedback or feature requests or bugs. It would be great if this can become a central place to organize and track all major nature and wildlife photography contests. I know some big ones are still missing and working on adding more...

Thank you, and good luck with your next contest!
