The Milky Way rises… above the wildflowers in Sun Valley, Idaho. Spring is officially here, even though winter never really seemed to come this year, but at least the Milky Way season is in full swing now... time to get out and enjoy those dark starry Idaho nights again.

The beginning stage of totality during the total lunar eclipse, or “Blood Moon,” that occurred in the early hours of March 3rd, 2026, as seen over the Pacific Ocean from the boardwalk of Venice Beach/Marina Del Rey, California. I might always be late to the party, but I never miss out… it was a night with little sleep, but I wasn’t missing this amazing spectacle, especially while visiting the area where I used to live for years, and from where more or less, my photography journey began.

Same mountains, same night, different angle. The second night of the MLK geomagnetic storm was by far the better for me. A couple decent substorms, ice fog rolling in and out, and an absolute monster of a meteor were all captured.

Photo from a wild time-lapse that is soon to come…

Beautiful moonlit nights flying above Ketchum, Idaho will never get old. If you can believe it, once upon a time long ago, we used to get plenty of snow…

If at first you don’t succeed, try again… I have been wanting to capture another winter aurora over the Boulder Mountains in Idaho since I originally did it back in 2023, and this past geomagnetic storm finally provided me that opportunity, even if at first it came with some disappointment. Even though the storm packed a punch, it definitely didn’t produce as good of a show here in North American lower latitudes as one would think from the solid data (higher latitudes and Europe for sure got the best of it), but it still put on a few short bursts of activity (substorms) worth the two painfully cold sleepless nights. Just goes to show even when things look promising the aurora is never a given. It takes time and patience and sometimes entire nights spent outside waiting for that one moment, that leaves as fast as it comes.…

A faint glow of aurora on the horizon above a frozen land, as the Big Dipper is framed perfectly in the center. Some days you accidentally catch the aurora without even trying. Then others, such as last night, you go in with high expectations and end up with nothing. It takes patience to play this game, but nonetheless always worth it.

Orion settling in above Baldy in a time when the snow was plentiful… how beautiful it is. Slowly and steadily more snow is coming. It’s just a matter of a time and a little patience.
