Minutes after workers exit the bus that brought them to work they dispersed into the field. Some of the workers walked down the rows, out of site of the farm manager, then cut across to the right to leave the farm and join the protest movement.

A man stands in conflict between what he believes is right, and what his obligations that have brought him here to this country; that is to provide for his family in Mexico.

A bus brought workers to the fields and as they unloaded, a group of protesting workers in the hundreds called to those getting off the bus to join their cause, to switch sides, to join the growing group of workers that were fired for voicing their opinions regarding their work conditions. Most of the men kept their heads down and didn't look over.

I tried to understand the gravity of their situation. They are here for their families, for better working opportunities, to be able to provide for their wives and children. This would be a difficult decision if one was put in that same place.

This one particular man stopped and turned back, he seemed to be wrestling with a choice that had unknown consequences.

BREAKING NEWS: Alfredo Urbano has been working for Sarbanand Farms on the H2A guest worker visa. His daily routine looks like this: He starts work at 6am and finishes for the day around 8 or 9 PM. Over the last 2 weeks he had complained about soreness in his feet. The conditions he was working in constantly left him working in wet shoes. Eventually, this lead to a second-degree infection that caused him tremendous amounts of pain and the need for medical attention.

BREAKING NEWS: In the small rural town of Sumas in northern Washington state, minutes away from the Canadian border, there are thousands of workers that come from Mexico to do seasonal work in the area.
Sarbanand Farms hired workers from Mexico under the legal H2A guest worker visa program. The farms unethical treatment caused the death of Honesto Silva Ibarra.
On August 8, the remaining workers gathered in protest along with hundreds of other supporters. They were fired for voicing their complaints to ownership of the farm for what happened to Honesto and their treatment.
These are men of strength, these are the faces that have seen and experienced circumstances unimaginable to many of us.

I worked on a project in eastern Washington state documenting laborers who work in fruit orchards. I was hoping to capture the daily life and dignity of those that work tirelessly in the heat of the sun, carrying hundreds of pounds of produce so that our markets can be stocked with products.

While walking the orchard I found a man that instantly illuminated strength and courage and dignity. He asked me to walk with him for awhile so I could learn the demands of his job. He shared his shoulder bags with me, asked me to get on their ladders and work with them for awhile, to know how hard the work actually is. I was humbled by their generosity and willingness to bring me into their lives so openly.

Exploring dark alleys has always been one of my things. It's a way of discovering moments that would otherwise go unnoticed, because the unknown has always provided great things for me.
Walking through the narrow passageways in Dharavi there are sections, and then levels within those sections, and each of those shops, and the people that work there focus on a particular industry; metal recycling, fabric recycling, garment production, the list goes on almost indefinitely.
In one of these darker walkways deep in the slum, I came across this boy leaning his head on his hand, watching people pass and talking with friends.

In small villages throughout India people spend countless hours in front of their homes, sharing stories, taking breaks from the relentless heat of the sun and keeping connection with one another as a main priority.

This families home sits alongside the edge of a river that seldom gets visitors. It's not that they are isolated from society, it's more that the village is very difficult to get to. The only way to visit is by taking a two hour dugout boat ride up river. It's honestly beautiful to witness the contentment of people in places like this. It's not to say life is easy, because it's not, it's actually very challenging at times. But it's a different type of struggle than we're use to. Unlike placing value on objects and material position, the struggle is at times more attune to survival on the most basic terms.
So this contentment comes from a place of acceptance. An understanding that this is the life they live, that it doesn't make any difference if one complains because it is their life. So they live with a gratitude for the simplest things, like time with family, time with community, food for their family and shelter for their children. All this while they smile with a grace that is magnetic.

In remote village in northeast India, students attend school to elevate their opportunities and provide them with tools for the modern world. This class of students are specifically learning English and it was so amazing to speak with them. Most of their lessons are in English as well as their communication with the teacher.
