Warblers are elusive. They’re often high in trees where the angle and distance doesn’t make for very interesting pictures. When they descend to eye level they tend to stick to thick cover. Today was a yellow warbler kind of morning where I had the chance to observe two different warblers up close and personal. I took lots of photos, and this one best captures the warbler’s essence.

I honestly wasn’t paying attention. At 5:30am I’d just paddled away from the dock; my coffee still sat untouched. I looked up and a heron appeared in the fog, beautifully lit and isolated, with a gorgeous background. When I captured this photo I suspected it could be special. What do you think?

The loon was floating solo in a sheltered location when it began to wail; that haunting call loons often use to locate a mate. He wailed three separate times before his partner materialized, surfacing near my boat from the depths of the lake. This photo is of the bird in mid-wail; note that the point of the bill remains closed. It’s amazing how much sound volume is produced!
