Dear New Senior Moms,
First of all -- deep breath. I know the year ahead will be packed with "lasts" and "firsts" all at the same time. Last first day of school, Last home game, last concert, last time you will be required to sign a permission slip. But it's also the first time you'll watch them step into this new, exciting chapter with all the confidence and growth they've been working towards for years.
If I could go back and whisper something to myself at the beginning of senior year, it would be this: STAY PRESENT. It's so tempting to think ahead -- to College applications, graduation parties, dorm shopping-- but the magic is right here, right now. In the car rides. In the late-night talks when they should be sleeping. In the ordinary, everyday moments you'll wish you could replay later.
Say "YES" to the extra photos, the random ice cream run, the late night snack stop. Even if they roll their eyes, and especially even if you are tired. These are the little threads that weave the memory quilt you'll hold onto when the house feels just a bit too quiet.
And please- book the senior photos. Even if it's not with me. Not just for announcements or social media, but because these pictures freeze them exactly as they are in this moment- on the edge of everything. You'll want to see their smile, their style, their spark from this chapter years from now. Trust me, one day you'll flip through them and it will feel like yesterday.
So, mama to mama-- don't rush through it. Hold their hand (literally and figuratively) as long as they'll let you. Celebrate them in every way you can. And when the cap and gown moment comes, you'll be so glad you soaked it all in.
With love and understanding,
A mom who's just a step ahead of you â¤ď¸
