Want a fall session that doesn't scream "FALL"?

Even if you want to do your session in the fall because of the weather, your schedule or the gorgeous fall locations, you may not want your senior photos to have a seasonal vibe and that's OK!

There are so many great reasons to do your session in the fall -- one of them being the gorgeous light! And there are so many fantastic locations that are perfect in the fall without it LOOKING like fall.

Think: neutral downtown backdrops, soft open fields, garden spots, and a few flower farms that are still blooming into fall.

Here are 6 different fall sessions that look like they could be taken almost any time of year!

When should you actually book your fall senior session? Here's how I'd help you decide 🍂

It comes down to the vibe you want:

Still chasing summer and not ready to let it go? September is your month — warm enough for flowy dresses and short dresses, with water sessions and flower farms still in full swing.

Want the best of both worlds? October has the best weather of the whole year, hands down. If you want fall foliage in October, the mountains are the place to go. Or choose almost any valley location for a neutral backdrop — either way you can't go wrong, and you get the most wardrobe flexibility of any month (think sweaters + layers).

Want ALL the fall color, close to home? November is peak season in the Central Valley — vineyards, tree-lined downtown streets, all the cozy layers. Just a heads up: it's also my busiest month for family sessions, so it books up fast.

And yes, I know December is typically considered "winter" but with peak fall color starting so late in the valley, you sometimes get the BEST fall vibes the first week or so of December with all those fall leaves on the ground and the ivy on buildings turning red! It's your last chance to get fall vibes before all the rain!

We squeezed in a family session for the Eagals right before their two college kids headed back — and when I say squeezed in, we did it in less than 45 minutes!

Coordinating around two college schedules, activities, and travel is no small feat. But once your kids are grown, these moments get harder to catch AND more precious to have. A quick session together, all in one place, is a gift you'll treasure for years.

My calendar usually books out weeks ahead, but slower stretches (like right now, in summer!) sometimes open up unexpected spots. I've had clients tell me they wanted a session before school started but never reached out because they assumed I'd be booked solid.

Don't be embarrassed to ask! Life is chaotic, schedules are tight, and I get it. If there's any way I can make it work, I will — because I know how much these moments matter.

Reach out, even at the last minute. You never know what's open.

And last, but not least of my favorite Summer locations is the mountains!

If you're worried about the summer heat in the valley, we can head to the mountains. The areas around Lake Tahoe are some of my absolute favorite places to photograph anywhere in the world. It's cooler, it's stunning, and the images look like something out of a magazine.

#4 on my list of favorite summer locations is flower farms!

Everyone thinks spring for flowers, but summer flower farms are incredible and - bonus - they're predictable. You don't have to guess when things will bloom. Our area has farms with lavender, sunflowers, dahlias, zinnias, and so many other bright, gorgeous options. Many of these spots also have rustic farm settings that add tons of variety to a session.

Next up on my favorite summer locations is the beach!
Beach sessions are one of my most requested locations, and summer is genuinely the best time to pull one off. More daylight and more flexibility in the schedule make beach sessions so much easier to coordinate in summer than any other time of year.

This week I’m going to highlight some of my favorite summer photoshoot locations.

First on the list: Water Locations! Rivers, lakes, reflections, movement - water adds something special to senior photos.

Summer is a fantastic time to incorporate water into your session, and we have so many beautiful spots nearby.

These locations are also a great way to stay cool during a summer photoshoot. It’s a win win!
