Childhood Magic
This week’s Beauty of Stockton image captures the carousel at Pixie Woods, which has brought joy to hundreds of thousands of children over the decades. Its beautifully crafted, hand-painted horses date back to the 1920s, and the carousel became a treasured part of the park shortly after Pixie Woods opened on July 23, 1954.

With summer arriving and the park preparing to celebrate its 72nd season, Kevin wanted to capture not only the beauty of the carousel itself, but also the sense of wonder it creates for the children who ride it. To achieve that feeling, he used a photographic technique called panning—often seen in sports photography—to convey motion within a still image. The swirling colors, streaks of light, and a child’s joyful smile combine to capture the magic, excitement, and timeless fantasy that make the carousel such a cherished part of the Pixie Woods experience.

What does it take to photograph a large group like the volunteers from the Haggin Museum?

A lot more than just saying “everyone smile!”

Creating a portrait like this means carefully posing each person so everyone is seen well, while also building large, even lighting that reaches across the entire group. Kevin used powerful light sources placed high and at carefully controlled angles to evenly light everyone, while balancing that light with the existing ambient light in the room for a natural, polished look.

It may look effortless in the final image, but there is a great deal of planning, experience, and technical precision behind making a large group portrait come together this smoothly!

This week’s Beauty of Stockton image captures a serene spring afternoon of sailboats resting in their berths, still blue water shimmering under the sun, and vibrant wildflowers brightening the shoreline. It’s the perfect place to pause, breathe deeply, and savor the moment.

Whether you’re strolling along the waterfront, admiring seasonal blooms, or setting sail on a new adventure, this special place offers the invitation to slow down, unwind, and embrace the tranquility of the moment.

A huge thank you to Alaska-based photographer Michael Eggert for leading an unforgettable photo expedition into the Yukon area of Canada, a surprise adventure that Kevin’s wife, Tracy, planned as a gift for Kevin’s 60th birthday.

Surrounded by some of the most breathtaking landscapes we’ve ever experienced, Kevin couldn’t resist capturing this portrait of Michael in his element. What an incredible journey, unforgettable scenery, and memories we’ll treasure forever.

Graceful Colors

With San Joaquin Delta College celebrating its 91st commencement ceremony this past week and more than 1,300 graduates crossing the stage, it felt like the perfect time to reshare one of Kevin’s Beauty of Stockton images featuring the college’s iconic koi pond, a peaceful oasis in the heart of campus.

Completed in 1976, the koi pond has long offered students a quiet place to pause, reflect, and recharge. In Japanese culture, koi are often seen as symbols of ambition, perseverance, and resilience, qualities that perfectly reflect the journey of so many graduates.

More than just a scenic landmark, the pond has become part of the shared memories of generations of students, faculty, and visitors. Its graceful beauty has almost certainly brought a smile, a moment of calm, or a sense of inspiration to many of this year’s newest graduates as they celebrated an important milestone in their lives.

Kevin made a special delivery today to Stockton Fire Station #7 next door to the studio. When the station received its brand new ladder truck, Kevin happened to spot it parked outside and quickly grabbed his camera to capture the moment.

We decided to surprise the firefighters with a framed print of the image to commemorate the occasion and dropped it off this morning. It felt like a small way to say thank you for everything they do to help protect Stockton and its residents every day.

We hope the print finds a special place at the station and becomes an addition to the department’s history and the people behind it.

One of the best parts of photographing families for local magazines is the opportunity to create portraits in places that are truly meaningful to them. While beautiful locations like the UOP campus and Lodi Lake are always popular choices, Kevin loves discovering settings that help tell each family’s unique story, creating something personal that makes the portraits even more meaningful.

If you’re looking for family portraits that feel customized, authentic, uniquely you and magazine-cover quality, send us a message. We would love to help create something truly memorable for your family!

Infinite View

This week’s Beauty of Stockton image is a repost of one of the project’s most popular earlier features, a photograph highlighting the striking openness of Stockton’s downtown waterfront and a view that seems to stretch endlessly toward the horizon.

It is easy to forget how rare a skyline like this can be. Without mountains or towering obstructions interrupting the scene, Stockton’s sunsets unfold across an expansive canvas of sky and reflected light. As evening colors shift across the Delta, the city becomes silhouetted in a way that feels almost coastal, serene, boundless, and quietly inspiring.

One of the things Kevin loves most about photographing Stockton is discovering moments like this that remind us just how much beauty surrounds us every day!

Here’s a look at Kevin’s photography featured in the May issue of , highlighting Tiffany Phovixay.

This shoot came together across two different locations: the San Joaquin County Family Resource Center exhibit at the Stockton Children’s Museum, where Kevin photographed Tiffany and her incredible team, and at a beautiful setting near the Resource Center offices, where he. captured portraits of Tiffany with her wonderful family.

It was a pleasure bringing together both sides of her story in one feature: community impact and family.
