This morning we unexpectedly said goodbye to Bergen, Bergie, Berg-meister, Bergdorf, Berg. He was the ultimate hiking buddy, the best big bro for looking out for the safety of his sisters, the weirdest animal I've ever known. He was part dog, cat, mountain goat, bear, wild hog, bunny rabbit, among others. He loved all living things and could certainly teach humanity a lesson about love. He grew up chewing leftover 2x4's on our construction site when we built our home. He kept watch over the girls as soon as they came home from the hospital, herded us and would get angry if we went somewhere without his protection. He joined me on possibly thousands of miles of hikes in the woods when all I needed was to get out of my head.

The house will certainly be more quiet now, less furry, but what I'll miss most is his presence in nightly storytime, his weird zoomies after he goes in any body of water, him sitting under the Christmas tree even if there wasn't space, and his undying devotion to his family.

May he steal all the food and toys he could ever want in his afterlife, may his wild spirit watch over us from his perch in the backyard, and may we always remember the laughter (instead of the destruction) he would cause.

Until later, our handsomest boy. 🐾
