Woah. It seems like forever since I've done a post like this...

Birthday to Birthday Special Offer

I've had the privilege of knowing some very special people but this time of year is especially hard in light of what happened a few months ago.

My year started well. I did my first session of the year in January. The last time that happened, I had a pretty good year. Lots of shoots. Lots of fun.

A few days after that photoshoot, someone asked me if I ever did "glamour" photos and scheduled her shoot for late March. Riding a high, I reached out to someone else who I thought lived out of state. Surprisingly, she had moved back to Michigan and we scheduled a date. Unfortunately, she got sick a couple days before the session.

But, like I always do, when someone tells me that they are interested, I imagine the shoot in my head and start buying outfits from Shein.

Yes. I have a decent wardrobe selection. If you're curious, ask me. I'm happy to share.

In April, one of my longest, closest friends passed away unexpectedly.

Her birthday is July 31st.

I lost my mother twenty-one years ago. Also unexpectedly.

My mom's birthday is August 31st.

In honor of these two wonderful women, I decided to run a special for the month of August.

From July 31st until August 31st, all sessions are $150.00. Unlimited time. Unlimited outfits. We shoot until we're done.

The attached photo also contains a couple birthday shoots. If you've ever thought about having pictures taken, I think you should do it. If it's on your bucket list for "someday," I think you should do it.

I don't believe in living life with regrets.

Personally, I've been working on a novel. I'm not going to talk about it here but... if it becomes popular, you can tell people that you had pictures taken by a famous author.

Many years ago, when I first started, one of my friends told me about a photoshoot that she had done for her friend during which she was only wearing some strategically placed sunflowers.

I haven't posted in a while because I was working on scheduling some shoots, editing some shoots, and dealing with a personal situation that hit me really hard.

Over the past 10+ years that L'envie Photography has been available, I have had a few situations of loss. A few years ago, I told one of my closest friends that I had started a business and suggested that she do a session whenever she came back to Michigan.

Unfortunately, there will never be a possibility of that happening. We try... but we never know what life has planned for us. That's why I suggest that everyone do a session. I recommend it even if you don't feel like you're perfect. I recommend it if you have had children or haven't had children. I recommend it regardless of how old you are. Because there is no right time.

I asked ChatGPT what the perfect time/age was to do a shoot. This is what it said:

There you have it. While there is no "perfect" time, any time that you choose is the perfect time. What is stopping you?

The answer should be, "Nothing."

Beauty at Every Age

I added this as a hashtag about five years ago. I had been talking with someone who was a little older than my average client about doing a photoshoot. Just as I wanted to showcase women of all body types and ethnicities, I also wanted to feature women of different ages… because beauty and wanting beautiful photos isn’t limited to younger people.

Yesterday, on Instagram, this appeared on my feed. I normally don’t show other photographers’ work on my Facebook but the concept is so wholesome and heartfelt. It also demonstrates that you should not limit yourself based on your age. You shouldn’t limit yourself based on anything.

Although the original person I was talking with has yet to schedule her own session, a couple of weeks ago I went to Starbucks, like I do every day. The women who work there know I take photos. I show them pictures of the birds I have taken. They actually had one of my calendars hanging on the wall. They know I take pictures of dogs. (Check out Dodge Park Doggos on IG). They also know that I photograph people. Usually, it’s because they always ask, “You’re here early. What are your plans for the day?” “Oh, I have a family shoot,” or, “I’m editing pictures from my last session.

So a couple weeks ago, I walk in and one of the women asked, “Scott, do you ever take glamor shots?” I replied, “Of course. That’s what I do.” She then told me that she had some done when she was forty. She went to one of the stores at a mall. They had props… a hat, a leather jacket, a feather boa…

Then she said that she went to Florida for a vacation and on the flight home, she met someone on the plane. She wanted to get new pictures. I gave her a price. She scheduled a date for the end of March. She ordered four outfits. I know that one is a sparkly, red dress.

She is sixty-six years old.

I am really looking forward to the shoot at the end of the month. Especially because when she asked if I had a wardrobe or would she have to bring her own, I explained that most of the wardrobe I have is lingerie. She responded, “I’m okay with lingerie.”

Unlimited looks. Unlimited hours.

What does Valentine’s Day mean to YOU?

Candy?
Flowers?
Candlelight?
Love?

I choose love… but a special kind of love.

Let me tell you why.

As a photographer, I view candy, candlelight and flowers as props. The pictures on this post show how candy can be used in photos. In fact, I will be doing a session sometime in the next couple weeks using candy and flowers.

The love I’m referring to is self-love.

What this means is that you don’t have to have anyone special in your life to do a photoshoot for. You can do it for yourself. And that starts with loving yourself.

If you love yourself, you can love others. You can love your significant other. You can love your children. Without self-love, you can’t.

Last year, I started to focus on myself. I started getting massages every two weeks. I also started tanning every two weeks. Of course, I was going to a private place but at the same time, nobody was judging me. No, my body is not perfect. But I was taking care of ME.

You need to take time to care for yourself, too. For many people, that means going shopping for new clothes or getting a mani/pedi or getting your hair done. It can even mean locking the bathroom door and taking a bath and just spending time with yourself.

A photoshoot is the perfect way to love yourself. Because you get to do all those things and more. Get your hair done and your makeup, too. Get a manicure. Buy new clothes. Then spend a few hours focusing on you… while I focus on you, too. (Photographer joke.)

You should live your life. You should take chances. You should love yourself in any way possible.

And although I recommend loving yourself all year long, in February, all sessions are only $75.00 per hour!

2024 Recap

It’s 2025!

As we start a new year, I want to look back on 2024 and thank the people who chose L’envie Photography for their special memories.
I can’t believe that 2024 was the 10th anniversary for L’envie Photography. It seems like only yesterday that I posted on my personal page that I was looking for people to help build my portfolio.

In the beginning of the year, I wanted to increase my followers on Instagram so I did a referral-a-thon. I asked my current followers to recommend someone who they thought was beautiful inside and out and deserved a free photo session. I ended up giving away TWO sessions!

I then started messaging the winners and, with their feedback, I ordered a special cake for the anniversary event at the end of April.
I also made a choice to step outside my own comfort zone and pass out business cards to people who had an interesting look, a look that I thought would look awesome in pictures. I primarily focused on women with tattoos. I did this because I wanted to stop asking the same people who had expressed interest when they were going to schedule their session.

I kept getting the same responses.

I’m ready. Let’s do this.
I’m not ready.
I’m ready. Let’s do this.
I’m not ready.

I understand that things happen. Maybe I’m too understanding.
I put so much into a session: The preparations before, buying anything I’ll need, the day of the shoot, retouching the pictures after.

Yes, it’s part of being a photographer but some people take advantage of me. Like, when you tell me you’ll be at my house at noon on a weekday so I take the day off and then you don’t show up until 6pm and I could have worked my 9-5 job.

In May, I decided to start an Instagram page for dog photos. But since it’s a different company, I didn’t include them in the photo here.

I did some family photos for repeat clients and got a new family who I hope will become repeat clients.

I did a creative “box” session for a group of friends.

At the end of November, I photographed a dance recital in Canada. Yes, I’m international.

So did everything that I wanted to happen happen? No.

But I already have a session scheduled for January. The last time I did a session this early in the year, I had a pretty good year. I did my first milk bath shoot. I changed the way I shoot to give me more control over the editing process. I upgraded my lighting and my camera. I moved from a 500 square foot apartment into a home with tons of possible shooting locations.

If everything holds true, 2025 should be a good year, too.
I’m always interested in trying new creative things. I have tons of ideas. I’m also always looking to update my portfolio. You can always contact me about that. If you have some ideas you want to try, all you have to do is message me. We can schedule a time.

I think it should be a good year. Let’s raise a glass to 2025!
