The older I get, the more the meaning of leadership changes for me. I used to believe that leaders were simply the boss. They could control a room, influence with aggression, and only had a “lay the hammer down” approach.
While there is merit in using those tactics at times, I’ve learned that a leader is more about influencing through empathy. Empathy takes strength. It also means keeping ourselves accountable as leaders.
Being a good leader is being willing to have the hard conversations.
Being a good leader is knowing when to use their passion to influence productively.
Being a good leader is understanding that everyone won’t agree with you, and being willing to have a productive conversation in response.
Being a good leader means knowing everything isn’t always positive, and that’s okay. Being realistic doesn’t mean giving up optimism.
Being a good leader means being faithful to your convictions, no matter who might disagree.
Sometimes it means being alone. And that’s okay!
What are we teaching them? Are we teaching them to cower when met with opposition? Are we teaching them to implode if opinions differ from theirs? I hope not. I hope we’re teaching them to meet opposition with strength, empathy, confidence, and boldness.

I can’t believe I missed yesterday, but excuse me while I celebrate today! One of my greatest privileges is working with and photographing cowboys and cowboy-gals. This way of life is without question the best one to live, in my eyes. And it can all be exemplified in one item- the hat. Hats can give you insight on where a person is from, what they do, what the weather is like where they are, and their personal style. From the punchers to the buckaroos and flat hatters, to the year-round silver bellies in the Deep South, I love studying differing shapes and hat choices. How about you?
