Please join the SCAHS National Art Honor Society for their First Friday February ‘Create For A Cause’ event-Feb. 1st from 5:00-7:00. The proceeds from this event will benefit Mother’s Mercy Children’s Centre in Arusha, Tanzania. To register/donate go to ifstudios.bigcartel.com
Mother’s Mercy Children’s Centre is a school/day care in Arusha, Tanzania for orphans and indigent children ages 2-6. We especially target children who have single or unemployed parents, and/or have experienced neglect or familial substance abuse problems. We are currently serving 60 children and have recently partnered with Selfless Solutions’ ‘Watoto Wa Baba Simba Education Initiative’ to send 9 of our children to Blue Sky primary school on January 7th of 2019.
When they arrive at the centre, the children are fed a breakfast of porridge or bread with tea. Then, they brush their teeth with donated brushes before beginning lessons for the day. The children receive lessons in English (Grammar & Phonics), Mathematics, Kiswahili (the local language), and do art/creative thinking activities. The children are given multiple breaks throughout the day in which they are free to interact and play with each other on our beautiful new playground. After lessons are finished for the day, the children receive lunch which consists of local dishes such as wali na marahage (rice & beans) and makande (corn & beans), before they return home to their parents or guardians. For many, the lunch is likely to be their last meal until they return to school the next day.
As stated above, MMCC is working with Selfless Solutions to send its children to one of the best primary schools in the Arusha area once they outgrow the centre. We are working to find ways of extending this sponsor program throughout the entire continuum of the children’s academic journey. It is MMCC’s goal to follow and support each of our children from their first day at our school, until they graduate from university or have landed a solid job.
MMCC is funded entirely through donations, and thus our ability to function effectively is dependent upon gifts from generous individuals and groups. We are so grateful that the SCASD National Art Honor Society chose us to be the beneficiary of their ‘Create for a Cause’ campaign, and would like to send our thanks in advance to those who go out to support the event!
