Lucifer Hummingbird, Coronado National Memorial

Very exciting to have this bird perch up in good light and natural habitat. Rare anywhere in the US, this particular bird was seen within sight of the Mexican border. Most sightings in Southeast Arizona are at feeders, I'm a big fan of the natural perch in this shot.

This may be one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. Brown Jays at Santa Margarita Ranch, Starr County, Texas. March 2025

Brown Jays are incredibly rare in the United States, in fact it's been 15 years since a record of Brown Jay anywhere other than this one ranch. Their guided tours reliably offer great views of this species at feeding stations, and in April 2024 I was stoked to get my lifer here with my partner and family. On my solo return to SMR this year, the whole family of Brown Jays shockingly flew directly toward us while we were on the bluff overlooking the Rio Grande, well away from the feeding station. I couldn't believe my luck when these two perched up on a yucca flower, bathed in the warm light of the rising sun. It was a beautiful, unforgettable experience.

The charismatic and captivating White-eyed Vireo! At most of the sites I visited in Texas, these could be heard singing their energetic song from deep in the brush, but this one in particular got curious and allowed me to get this nice shot!

The backlog of Texas birding content from earlier this month is enormous, but I'm getting around to it! This was one of my biggest targets for the trip, the long-staying Mottled Owl at Santa Margarita Ranch. This is only the 2nd ever record of this species in the United States, with its typical range extending through Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. This particular bird, though, has decided that it likes Texas, having been hanging out at the ranch for about a year and a half, delighting hundreds or maybe thousands of birders from across the country.

Wanted to be in the moment so didn't fiddle too much with my camera, but managed to capture an interesting image of totality. We had full cloud cover for at least 15 minutes leading up to totality and the clouds somehow seemed to part exactly at the right moment. You can see the wispy high clouds that remained, and we did not get to see lots of detail in the corona, but we did have nearly 4 minutes staring into the eerie blue of that "all seeing eye". You can see a few solar prominences around the perimeter. A few stars and planets were also visible nearby, and we had a decent "360⁰ sunset" effect.
