💜🩵 September is Su***de Prevention Month 💜🩵
There are people walking among us carrying battles we know nothing about.
Sometimes they’re the quiet ones.
Sometimes they’re the angry ones.
Sometimes they’re the ones who stopped showing up.
And sometimes… they’re the funniest person in the room.
• In 2024, more than 14 million adults in the U.S. seriously considered su***de. Nearly 49,000 people died by su***de.
• The su***de rate among males is nearly 4× the rate among females.
• In 2024, people 80 and older had the highest su***de rate by age group in the U.S.
• In 2023, su***de was the second-leading cause of death for ages 10–14, 15–24 and 25–34.
• Here in Minnesota, 813 lives were lost to su***de in 2024. Those aren't just numbers...
They were somebody's child. Somebody's parent. Somebody's sibling, spouse, best friend, coworker, neighbor or favorite person.
So this month... and every month - please check on your people. Su***de doesn't have one single cause. Trauma, isolation, substance use, mental and physical health conditions, chronic pain, relationship or financial stress, violence and other circumstances can all contribute to risk.
September 10th is World Su***de Prevention Day. The 2026 theme is “Changing the Narrative on Su***de,” with the call to action “Start the Conversation.”
- Ask twice when someone says, “I'm fine.”
- Make room for uncomfortable conversations.
- Listen without judgment.
- Don't assume someone is okay because they're smiling.
- Believe someone when they tell you they're struggling.
And never make ANYONE feel ashamed for needing help.
You don't have to understand someone's pain for their pain to be real.
🖤 And if you're the person struggling right now:
~ You don't need to have the right words.
~ You don't need to explain everything.
~ You don't need to wait until it gets worse.
And you don't need to be “suicidal enough” to ask for help.
🩵 Please stay;
Stay for another sunrise. Another cup of coffee. Another autumn. Another song you haven't heard yet. Another belly laugh. Another person you haven't met. Another tiny, ordinary moment that someday might mean everything.
The world isn't finished with your story yet.
