Saturday afternoon I had the absolute pleasure of meeting up with Alex and her family for a Forget-Me-Not session to honor sweet Marcy. Alex is Marcy's human and has been by her side since Marcy was just a little pup. In those early days, Marcy was so small that Alex carried her around in a backpack. These two are best friends, and it shows.

Marcy is a big cuddler in the morning and loves to snuggle before turning the sass on and insisting on having her breakfast. She is a firm believer that breakfasts (and dinners) should come in firsts and seconds, with several rounds of treats in between. She loves exploring with Alex by her side, especially if Alex brings snacks. But even without treats, this sweet, goofy girl is all love.

Marcy recently completed chemotherapy treatment, and she has follow up scans this week to see how she's doing. Please send Marcy and Alex all the happy thoughts and warm wishes you can muster as they hope for good news!

"Equinox"

From Latin, aequus for equal and nox for night. Aequus means equal, but when you remove the first letter you have Equus - horse.

This photo, taken on the fall equinox, features Charlie silhouetted in the early morning light. Every equinox is a change point, a balance of light and dark. But the fall equinox is where we release, let go, and step into the darker half of the year where rest prepares us for spring's renewal.

Just two and a half weeks prior to the equinox, Charlie's best friend passed away. In those first couple of weeks he spent a lot of time by himself, processing, and integrating. Since the equinox, he has started to feel more like himself again. He's figuring out what his new normal is now, without her here in her body, by his side.

This photo captured a moment of that quiet introspection. Of light and shadow. Balance. Gratitude. And the one constant, change.

If you've never seen my friend work with his horse, Tally, I hope that someday you get to. And when you do, I hope you notice that he isn't asking himself "Hmm, what can I get Tally to do for me today?" Instead he asks, "How can I help Tally to grow today? How can I best serve our relationship?"

And it ends up looking more like a conversation between friends.

It doesn't mean that Chris never asks Tally to be uncomfortable, or to try something hard. But it means that he recognizes her edge, stops before she becomes flooded, and rewards her best try. These things will help Tally to be more confident over time. They will help her to trust Chris, but even more importantly, they will help her to trust herself too. They will help her to find a place of safety and home inside herself so that things that were once stressful fade away and become no big deal.

What a gift it is for any of us to have someone who encourages us to be the best, truest version of ourselves we can be, and who walks through the hard moments with us so that we can come out together on the other side.

Tonight's Harvest Moon was obscured by the clouds, but I got to appreciate the nearly-full autumnal equinox moon rising in the pastel sky on Tuesday evening. The equinox marks a balance between light and dark, and the Harvest Moon is often associated with gratitude, abundance, reflection, and release in preparation for what lies ahead. What have you grown this season?

Last Sunday I was honored to attend the 3rd Annual Focus on the Farm event at the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals. I was one of the 2026 photographers and visited the farm many times over the year to capture some images to donate to the fundraiser. These three photos were all sold at the silent auction and are now in new homes, so I thought I'd share them with you all! These are the titles I had given to the photos, but I invite their new homes to connect with the art in whatever way feels authentic to you!

"Empowered" features Trinity (now adopted), one of the friesians who came from a life of severe neglect and was rehabilitated at the MSSPA. Here she is, galloping through the fresh powder last winter, luxuriating in her freedom, and how good it feels to move in a body that has finally known kindness.

"A Mother's Love" shows mama Diane and baby Pepperjack when he was only a couple of days old. She nuzzled him lovingly during one of the brief moments that he paused from his zoomies to take a snooze in the shavings. Pepperjack was born at the farm this spring, six months after Diane's arrival, and he has charmed the hearts of many fans!

"Soul Window" was taken early one quiet morning on the farm. Friesian mare Merienna watched me as I slowly walked down the barn aisle. The soft morning light filled her stall, and as we gazed at one another, it was easy to understand the well-known saying that the eyes are the window to the soul. Today the MSSPA announced that after fifteen long months of legal battles, Merienna and the rest of the friesians are finally available for adoption. There has been lots of interest in these beautiful horses, and the MSSPA will make sure they find their perfect homes.

I am so grateful to have been a part of capturing the farm this year. The work done here by staff and volunteers is endless, heartfelt, lifesaving work. Please consider scheduling a tour to meet the horses, and making a donation to support the rescue and the horses living within the sanctuary and respite the barn provides.

Earlier this evening, in the golden hour glow, I had the privilege of meeting up with my friends Subi and Chance for a Forget-Me-Not session celebrating the 18 years they have spent together. Subi purchased strong, handsome, and slightly unruly Chance on a whim. She wanted to learn to ride, and something about him spoke to her. It was just meant to be. Over the years she has received loving support and care from her barn family, the Flaherty’s, who helped train Chance and helped her to learn and grow as a rider.

Since knowing Chance, Subi has ridden on different adventures all over the world, and Chance enjoyed his time in the spotlight with their friend Jess in the saddle at The Big E. But Subi looked back most fondly at their rides together at the beach, learning to jump, and quiet moments spent together just the two of them in the ring. She wrote, “Chance and the Flaherty's gave me the courage to believe in myself, not to be afraid and take risks.” If that’s not what loving horses is about, I don’t know what is.

Thank you Subi, and your Flaherty Equestrian Center family, for sharing Chance with me for a little while tonight. It was an honor to spend time in the company of old friends celebrating him together. 💖

Today, these two had to say their final goodbyes to each other, and I said goodbye to a mare who I was lucky enough to love and care for in the golden years of her life. Every day with her was a gift.

Due to this loss (as well as ongoing battery challenges with my laptop) editing and response times may be a little slower than usual. Thank you for understaning.

This morning I met Sarah and Eric, and their very sweet girl Lilly Lou, for a Forget-Me-Not session. Eric adopted Lilly (now 14 years old!) from a New Hampshire shelter when she was just a year old. They've climbed many mountains together, and explored countless trails, many leading to the top of New Hampshire's 4k foot peaks! These days, Lilly ambles a little slower down the trails, and she might not hear as well as she used to when Sarah and Eric call her back, but she still loves being on adventures with her family. Thank you Sarah and Eric for sharing your sweet Lilly Lou (and her sister Sadie) with me this morning. It was an honor to be part of the pack for a little while! 💖🐾
