For the 41st time in my life, I’m heading to the AMIA Annual Session. This year it happens to be in San Francisco. I’m looking forward to meeting up with many of my informatics colleagues to find out what’s new in our field, who’s doing what, and where the state of our science has taken us in the two years since ChatGPT made its debut.

Are we alone? Behold, one of our neighbors: The Sculptor Galaxy...

The Sculptor Galaxy (a.k.a.: the Silver Coin Galaxy, Silver Dollar Galaxy, NGC 253, or Caldwell 65) is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor. The Sculptor Galaxy is a starburst galaxy, which means that it is currently undergoing a period of intense star formation. (Wikipedia)

This late autumn object is in the constellation of Sculptor. It is very low on the horizon in our area, and it does not get above 30 degrees from the horizon at its transit point. This week, we had some amazing stargazing weather, and since I had a free night at home (vs. being in Princeton), I took advantage of the clear skies and spent some time on the Westport Astronomical Society 14" reflector.

After seeing Sasa Lin's wonderful time lapse of Comet C/2023 from Monday (when the comet was either visually seeable or just a touch dimmer - in other words very bright), I decided to go out at the first chance I had to get a similar shot over the Tappan Zee Bridge... It turned out pretty well...

Why it's called the "Dipper"

If you look at Ursa Major, the main stars take the form of a ladle. At this time of year, the cup of the ladle looks as if it's going to reach down and scoop up some water from lakes or other bodies of water. It's said that during slavery times, there was slave song called "Follow the Drinking Gourd" - and the "drinking gourd" was the Big Dipper (dipper = ladle or drinking gourd).

In this image from last evening, the breeze was so calm that we were able to get a shot of the entire Big Dipper reflected in the Barkhamsted Reservoir from our vantage point. It's upside down as you'd expect from a reflection, but it's clearly visible in this capture.

Thanks to David Schafran for pointing this out to me (He got the shot first). This is a neat shot...

We went out last night to shoot the aurora borealis, but all I came away with was a star trail over the lake.

The aurora forecast was for a great night - similar to what we had in August - however, the goddess Aurora did not shine on us last night... after more than 3 hrs of waiting, nada - not even a glimmer of green. Had there been anything, my Star Trails frames would have grabbed it... Not a bad image, but not the one we were hoping for...

Shot at the Saville Dam and Barkhamsted Reservoir in up-state Connecticut near the Massachusetts state line... This image was about 100min of 13s frames.

If you are in Stamford this AM: does anyone notice that the air smells funny outside? I can’t put my finger on it, but the outdoor air has a strange smell to it. Both in North Stamford and by The Ridgeway Stop and Shop… anyone else notice this?

A Perseid Meteor inside the Aurora:

See the right side near the middle of the frame... I have several like this with solitary meteors. We actually saw a few fireballs with smoke trails last evening to compliment the wonderful aurora!
