Are we alone? Behold, one of our neighbors: The Sculptor Galaxy...
The Sculptor Galaxy (a.k.a.: the Silver Coin Galaxy, Silver Dollar Galaxy, NGC 253, or Caldwell 65) is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor. The Sculptor Galaxy is a starburst galaxy, which means that it is currently undergoing a period of intense star formation. (Wikipedia)
This late autumn object is in the constellation of Sculptor. It is very low on the horizon in our area, and it does not get above 30 degrees from the horizon at its transit point. This week, we had some amazing stargazing weather, and since I had a free night at home (vs. being in Princeton), I took advantage of the clear skies and spent some time on the Westport Astronomical Society 14" reflector.
