“I have had moments when I doubted, cried and wondered if I should keep going,” says Dawn Harper-Nelson. “This is the desire in my heart. And if it doesn’t work out, it won’t be because it got too difficult and I said ‘I’m done.’”

Dawn Harper-Nelson, shown working out in Belleville, IL, will find out in the next two months if she will be returning to the Olympics after winning a gold medal in 2008 and a silver in 2012. Since the cancellation of the 2020 Olympics, she has spent the last year juggling the chore of raising her daughter Harper and training with husband Alonzo Nelson as her coach.

Friends and family gathered on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at the scene where three teenagers lost their life in a car accident the day before. They made posters for each teen and attached balloons to the stop sign at the intersection of Bluff Road and Trout Hollow Road just north of Valmeyer, Il.

Savannah Amsden was one of the first friends Destiny Smith, 14, made when she moved to Dupo, where they went to school together. Smith's mother, Ashley Moyer, says it is hard for the group of girls who were all close to eachother. Savannah's father, Tommy Amsden, spent several minutes alone in the ditch, where remains of the wreck were still strewn about, trying to process the scene. "She was a 13 year-old," he repeated several times.

The other two passengers of the car have been identified as Joshua Moate, 18, of south St. Louis County; Hailey Lattina, 15, of Dupo. The driver of the truck they collided with was unhurt.

The Cardinals pulled out a win during their drizzly home opener against the Brewers thanks to a late game two run homer from Nolan Arenado. Fans were also welcomed back to Busch Stadium for the first time since October of 2019.

For the second time in two months, inmates at the St. Louis Justice Center in downtown St. Louis smashed out windows, started fires and threw debris in a disturbance on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021. Inmates in two separate cell blocks broke out of their cells and smashed windows overlooking the street where a large group began to congregate. Officers in riot gear deployed chemical irritants inside at least one cell block before removing inmates.

Dr. David Spencer poses for a portrait in the sequencing lab at the McDonnell Genome Institute in St. Louis on Wednesday, March 10, 2021. Spencer is the lead author on a study being published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Spencer and his team at Washington University say that gene sequencing can finally be put into practice by helping determine the best course of treatment for patients with blood cancers. This is among the first studies to show that whole genome sequencing can be used in routine clinical practice; a feat that was, until recently, cost prohibitive.
