Life has taken a nice, slow and yet speedy pace since having the baby. Time somehow moves slowly often, while moments fly by. Seeing my two babies grow right before my eyes has cemented even more my love for familyhood photos. These beautiful moments deserve to be honored in the stillness of a photo, in the print of a paper, and in the pages of a photo album.

For each of my kids, I have a journal that I write to them in. Funny stories, sweet stories, sad stories, the little mundane moments. This is an excerpt from Aramis’s journal:

“As a mom, I know that you watch every single thing I do. But it’s the little moments that make me realize and understand that even more. Yesterday, we were both drawing together. I was working on a cat and when I finished, looked at it and decided I wasn’t satisfied with it. I drew a light “X” through my drawing.

You were also working on a cat—your first cat drawing. And it was so beautiful! But after you finished, you, like me, decided you didn’t like it and drew a dark “X” through your picture.”

As parents, we often think that we are the ones teaching our children (and we definitely do!). But we tend to forget how much they are meant to teach us. And usually, they teach us about ourselves. They reflect us. They are our mirror. If we have learned to be dissatisfied, to find the negative first, our children will show us—because they will do the same.

Thankfully children learn quickly, so when we realize our own faults, we can begin again, and they will too.

Theresa’s Birth Story | PART 2

I quickly sent Caeli a text to let her know, “Hey Caeli! I think I was counting slow haha
I decided to time the last few on my phone to see what they actually were and they are 45 seconds long.”

It was pouring rain, and had been since I had gone to bed earlier that night. There hadn’t been any rain in the forecast—it had come suddenly. It was something I’d been praying for before labor started.

Caeli was on her way, driving through the drenching rain, and contractions were quickly getting stronger and more intense. Aramis, trying to find some way he could help, asked if I wanted to watch “The Office.” I gave a weak “ok” in response, but could hardly focus on the episode. Aramis quietly turned it off.

I was leaning on the birth ball with each new wave and beginning to instinctively groan low and quietly. Things shifted gears quickly though, and I immediately needed to hang on to Aramis through each contraction.

“Remember to breathe,” Aramis said, trying to comfort me, “take slow breaths.” I became annoyed that he was trying to tell me how to breathe and talking to me. Too tired to say anything though, I kept it to myself. Feeling helpless, Aramis decided to pull up a YouTube video on “How To Breathe Through Contractions.” He started the video. “Hey mama!” It said in a sweet, calm voice.

With the small bit of energy I could spare, I looked at Aramis forbiddingly and panted, “No. No. Turn it off.” Another contraction came.

Automatically, like he would a baby, Aramis whispered “shhh” as I held him and groaned. “Stop shushing me,” I whispered through another contraction. Aramis realized then that what I needed most was him to hold onto.

Theresa’s Birth Story | PART 1 (PC: .nolanphoto 😍)

The forecast: clear and warm — all week.

It was just after 1am and heavy splats started to rap against the window. Rain.

I woke up thinking pregnancy was getting the best of me and that I just couldn’t hold it. I went to the bathroom and changed my clothes, then went back to bed. A minute later, it happened again. Frustrated, I got out of bed to go back to the bathroom. Before I could even make it out of the room, my waters gushed out all at once, a growing puddle at my feet.

“Amor!” I yelled to Aramis, still asleep in bed. “My water broke!”

He sat up quickly, confused, and then jumped up to help me. I stood there like a statue, water still trickling down my legs, while he brought me some towels to clean up.

“I should probably call Caeli,” I mentioned to Aramis, who quickly agreed.

“How are you feeling?” my midwife asked.

“Good. No contractions yet. But I’m shaking a lot. I think it’s because I’m surprised.”

“Let me know when contractions start and when they are about 20-30 seconds long,” my midwife explained.

After our brief conversation, I decided to call my mom. I looked at the time. 1:25am.

“Are you having any contractions yet?” she asked, anxious and excited.

“Not yet.”

“Keep me updated!”

Not wanting to get anxious waiting for contractions to start, I decided to go back to bed.

Minutes passed. Sleep was nowhere to be found — just rest and growing excitement in the silence of the night. Soon I noticed a gentle tightening around my belly. Slowly coming and going.

Time passed quickly. 2:43am. Without realizing it, my contractions were growing. “One thousand one, one thousand two,” I would breath slowly through each wave. They were becoming consistent.

It was 3:06am when I called Caeli with an update: “The contractions are consistent now, but still only about 15 seconds long.”

“One thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three,” I would count slowly through each contraction. Another wave. I timed one on my phone to make sure I was counting the seconds correctly.

Another contraction. 48 seconds long. 5 minutes apart. I had been timing my contractions too slowly.

This past month of August has been nothing short of busy — but GOOD busy!

At the start of the month we got to interview and film my grandmas life story thanks to 😍 it was absolutely amazing!

Then we had a much needed visit with family❤️ After that, it was all hands on deck celebrating my youngest sister getting married!💍

It was an absolute non-stop month but a good one!💕 and now for September I’m looking forward to taking things easy.

Who else had a busy end of summer and is looking forward to more cozy, autumn days??🙋🏼‍♀️🍂

When August hits, I can’t help but get excited for fall. It’s the end of summer, and the long, warm days are still very much here. But in certain corners of nature, autumn’s grip is beginning to pull back the layers of the carefree summer days and quietly introduce the colors of fall.

Normally, I would jump right into the suggestions of fall, and fill my house and my mind with all the wonder of it. But this year, I’ve been consciously trying to be intentional about soaking up every last drop of the season I’m in NOW.

And now is still summer. I want to give my family as much summer as I can while it’s still here—to live in the moment of the season. That way when fall does come, we’ll be able to fully and completely immerse ourselves in it and enjoy those moments too.

So I’m going to finish this summer with the same enthusiasm my grandpa is doing here—ready to dive into giant, fresh watermelon. Let’s enjoy the taste of summer while it’s here.

What are you doing to soak up these last days of summer?!

The beginnings of a family. A seed planted that will soon take roots to create a foundation to grow.

Witnessing the love that two people have for each other as they begin their journey toward married life is always such an exciting blessing.

All the brand new joys that are waiting for them—the excitement of finally being one another’s forever, waking up next to this beautiful person every day. Learning their quirks and habits, sanctifying and dying to self. Slowly becoming more and more in tune with yourself and your vocation as a spouse—which is a mirror of Christ and the church.

Some people say that it’s better to get married later, when you have already grown into your own person. But isn’t it better to let your vocation of marriage mold you into the person you are MEANT to become? To not have to reshape with tension and stretching who you are?

Marriage doesn’t take away your individuality—it sculpts it and strengthens it and makes it even clearer. It makes you more YOU.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the value of photography and, more specifically, about my role as a photographer and what God is calling me to do through this business.

I don’t have answers right now, but I do know that the more I give my work over to God, and the more I put in the work, the more it will be clear to me where God is leading me.

And I also know that no matter what, ultimately, my photography is meant to bring others closer to God and his love for them.

This is my grandpa. He wasn’t a photographer. But I love this picture of him. And even though it’s “just” a picture, it allows me to learn more about him, and know him in different ways than I had before, even after he’s gone.

I think in some way, photos allow us to know more not only about those in the photos, but about God himself. Photos offer us a glimpse of a unique or hidden part of God that we may not have otherwise known.

So next time you are looking through photos, ask God to show you where he is in that picture, and ask him to give you the grace to see him always.

Who’s happy it’s finally 🌼 SPRING!? 🌼

🙋🏼‍♀️ I am!! It’s been a while since I’ve really been on here—it’s been a busy time for our little family. But now that spring is officially here, I am so excited to start working with families again and getting to know them! It’s my favorite part of what I do—not only getting to photograph beautiful people, but getting to know them on a deeper level!

During these warmer, sunny months of spring and summer, you can usually find me “spring cleaning” the house, working on home improvement projects, baking desserts, and spending all the time in the children’s garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden!🌿

What are your favorite things to do once the weather warms up?!

My word of the year was “connect.”

It’s fitting. It’s a true blessing that I was able to connect with each of my clients this past year. Each one of you showed me the beauty of family, the blessings and richness of children; and it’s something I hope I can return to you in a small measure through your photos.

Thank you. I’m so grateful for you. Cheers to 2023!✨🥂
