Roaring legends, lions command the African savanna.

Lion populations have declined by 43% in just two decades due to habitat loss and trophy hunting or retaliation killings. Additionally, they are functionally extinct in 15 African countries. It is estimated that as few as 23,000 remain today.

Consider supporting organizations like the African Wildlife Foundation, which works directly with communities to mitigate conflict and protect lions. These species can’t defend themselves, so it’s important for us to use our voices to protect them for generations to come!

Finding beauty in nature’s wonders! 🦩
Many flamingo species rely on specific wetland habitats that are increasingly threatened by human development and climate change. Advocate for wetland preservation to ensure these birds have a safe haven.

The Red-fronted Macaw was adopted as a regional symbol of pride and identity in 2012, and now decorates official government vehicles and buildings in Bolivia.

Nesting on steep river cliffs, the macaw survives on seeds and fruit, particularly cactus fruit, which provide both nourishment and moisture in its arid habitat. The macaws then serve as seed dispersers for cacti. Native food sources are often scarce because of habitat destruction for agriculture, grazing, or firewood. This causes macaws to rely on cultivated crops for dinner.

Like other macaws, this bird is in high demand by the illegal pet trade and is subject to other population threats such as habitat loss, persecution as a crop pest, and contamination by pesticides applied to crops.

Thanks to ABCs support, Bolivian group, Asociación Armonía, a 120-acre Red-fronted Macaw Nature Reserve was created to protect the largest known breeding colony of the species. The groups continue to work together to reduce persecution and illegal trafficking, which remains their greatest threat.

ABC has also helped designate two areas totaling 500,000 acres, in the heart of the Red-fronted Macaw’s range, where agricultural development, timber extraction, and hunting are restricted.

All of this information was found on abcbirds.org. Check out their site to read more about the Red-fronted Macaw, as well as other species they are working to protect!
