June 2026 – Wide Horizons

This month explores expansive views of land and water, where horizons capture the interplay of color and light.

These are truly some of my favorite photos to capture and share.

Photo taken at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri.

Rooted In Color — Red, White, and Blue

Red, white, and blue are mainstays in garden landscapes throughout the country. Today, those colors also reflect remembrance, sacrifice, and the freedoms shaped by those who served.

Rooted in Color — Golden Drift

A dense field of golden blooms turns this garden bed into a pattern of color and texture.

Often used as ground cover in warm-weather gardens, narrowleaf zinnias are valued for their ability to produce continuous color through the heat of summer. Their compact growth and resilience make them a favorite for landscapes designed to stay vibrant even during the hottest parts of the season.

Rooted in Color — Bleeding Heart

Bleeding Heart flowers arrive each spring with some of the season’s most recognizable shapes. Their heart-shaped petals hang in sequence along a curved stem, almost appearing suspended in midair. This image was captured at Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha.

Native to Asia and commonly grown in shade gardens throughout the Midwest, Bleeding Hearts thrive in cooler spring temperatures before fading back during summer heat. Their brief appearance each year makes them one of spring’s more fleeting displays of color.

Prairie Presence - Frog Log

Even the little guys deserve the spotlight.

In the Midwest, the American Bullfrog is a dominant force in the aquatic ecosystem. I found this bullfrog tucked into the edge of a pond, perfectly still. Close up, you really get a sense of their patient temperament. They can sit motionless for hours waiting for a meal. Capturing them at eye level gives them a much larger, almost statuesque presence.

Fun Fact: Bullfrogs are the largest true frogs in North America, but their most impressive trait is their ears. Those large circles behind their eyes are called tympana (eardrums). They help them stay highly attuned to the specific low-frequency bellows of other frogs across the water. (Source: Minnesota Department of Natural Resources)

Prairie Presence - Dynamic Duo

In Saline County, NE this pair stopped grazing and watched me for several minutes, providing a clean look at their coloring against the dry winter grass. Capturing them in the low, late-afternoon sun highlights the texture and temperament of these animals that are frequenly seen in the rural Nebraska landscape.

Paint Horses are frequently cited for their steady, "willing" temperament. In a herd environment, they are highly social and observant, often forming strong bonds with their handlers. (Source: APHA).

Prairie Presence — Midwest Stoic

There is a quiet strength in the stillness of the plains. It shows in the temperament of animals that roam the landscape.

This moment came at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. Time seems to stand still while waiting for the brief moment when the animal stops and meets your gaze.

Cattle have an incredible 330-degree field of vision. With eyes set on the sides of their heads, they can see nearly everything around them without moving. This panoramic view helps them stay alert across open landscapes. (Source: Farm Sanctuary)

Prairie Presence – Sandhills Sky

This month focuses on the character of the animals that inhabit or visit the Midwest. Whether they travel by land or air, they leave a lasting impact on our landscape.

Every spring, over 500,000 cranes converge on a short stretch of the Platte River to rest and refuel. Watching them move as a collective creates an incredible energy of thousands of individuals moving as one.

Sandhill Cranes are among the oldest living bird species. A fossil found in Nebraska is estimated to be roughly 10 million years old. When you watch them, you are looking at a lineage that predates the Grand Canyon. (Source: Smithsonian)
