“Food Photography is Fun!”

It’s a quiet, snowy Sunday night here in the Midwest. The house is warm, the TV hums softly in the background, and a major snowstorm is rolling in. Mom’s tucked on the couch, engrossed in her show, while I’m in the kitchen with a mission: comfort food to last us through the storm.

Tonight’s menu? Gumbo and chili—two classics, seasoned to perfection.

First, the gumbo: It’s a rich, savory pot filled with shrimp, chicken, and andouille sausage. The roux came out perfectly—golden, smooth, and packed with flavor. You can see the tender strings of chicken, vibrant bits of tomato, and fresh okra peeking through the broth. The aroma fills the house, wrapping us in its warm, comforting embrace. (Check out the photo—doesn’t it look mmm-mmm good?)

Then there’s the chili: I’m a “more meat than beans” kind of person, and this batch is just how I like it. Thick, hearty, and glistening under the kitchen light. The ground beef, tomato paste, and spices blend together perfectly, creating a pot of rich, meaty goodness. The second picture says it all—every glisten, every chunk, every swirl of seasoning.

After hours of cooking, I’ve got six quart bags of gumbo in the freezer and one in the fridge. The chili? Four quart bags, ready to keep us warm and well-fed while the storm does its thing.

Food photography is fun because it’s not just about capturing the dish; it’s about telling the story behind it. The warmth of the kitchen, the quiet hum of family time, and the joy of preparing something that will nourish us during the long, snowy week ahead.

What’s your go-to snowstorm meal?

While visiting the vegetable farm, I couldn’t resist capturing the beauty of the mums in both color and black-and-white. Personally, I’m drawn to the black-and-white shots for their ability to reveal the essence of the image without the distraction of color. But sometimes, color steals the show with its vibrancy. Let me know which one speaks to you: images 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6!

When I see these graceful works of art—gourds—I’m amazed by their natural shapes, reminiscent of a woman's hips, curved so elegantly. Sitting in a bin on the farm, they begged to be captured through my lens. Their organic forms are truly nature's artwork, each one unique and beautiful. These farm-grown gourds are perfect for fall décor, DIY projects, or simply appreciating their stunning design.

It’s fall, and I’m on a farm surrounded by a sea of pumpkins—white, yellow, green, bumpy, and smooth. The possibilities are endless! I’m thinking about carving them for Halloween decorations, drying the seeds for a snack, making homemade pumpkin pies, and even cooking and canning pumpkins like sweet potatoes. With so many varieties and flavors, there’s no limit to what you can create from these autumn treasures!

While visiting a vegetable stand, I couldn’t resist capturing the American flag flying proudly against the backdrop of a working farm. To me, it’s the ultimate symbol of patriotism—people surviving off the fruits of their own labor. You can see the barn, bins overflowing with fresh produce, pumpkins scattered outside, the hot house, and the cash register—a perfect snapshot of American capitalism in action. How much more patriotic can you get?

I found these vibrant squashes and gourds on a farm outside Springfield, Ohio. Something told me to stop, and luckily, I had my Nikon Z8 with me. The bin was brimming with brilliant colors—green, orange, and yellow—bursting with life. While the gourds aren't for eating, their beauty is undeniable, and once dried, they make perfect additions to DIY projects. The rustic charm of these farm finds captures the essence of autumn, making them not only decorative but full of seasonal spirit.

I found this hand-dried corn on a working farm, its cobs in rich shades of red, brown, yellow, grey, and white resting in a rustic box, ready to be transformed into popcorn or creative DIY crafts. The husks, ideal for twisting into dolls, carry the essence of October, with their warm, earthy hues evoking the cozy feel of autumn. Perfect for both crafting and snacking, this corn embodies the spirit of a true harvest season.

These small, orange pumpkins are uniquely disfigured, with bumpy, uneven skin and misshapen forms that give them an unusual, almost grotesque appearance. Their rough, warty surfaces add to their rugged and imperfect charm, making them a striking contrast to the smooth, classic pumpkins you might expect. Grown on a rustic vegetable farm, these peculiar pumpkins stand out with their twisted shapes and gnarly textures, perfect for adding an eerie, unsettling touch to autumn displays. Their odd, "ugly" look makes them ideal for Halloween décor, bringing an authentic, farm-grown spookiness to the season.

If I can't shoot people, then I shoot food. In a small town in Ohio, they have access to real vegetables in their natural setting. For those who don't know, these are an assortment of squashes.
