If you’ve ever thought “my child would never sit still for photos” or “this would just be too stressful for us” I want you to know that’s actually one of the most common things I hear. And the truth is, sessions are not supposed to feel like pressure or forcing something that isn’t working. They are meant to meet your child where they are, not expect them to fit into something they’re not comfortable with. That’s exactly why I approach sessions the way I do.

Most people think family photos are about getting everyone to smile and look at the camera, but honestly those are not the moments families end up loving the most. It’s this right here, the in between, the connection, the way your child leans into you or just exists in their own world and you’re right there with them. That’s what I focus on during sessions because those are the moments that actually matter later.

If you’ve been thinking about family photos but keep putting it off because you’re unsure how your child would do or if it would even be worth it, you don’t have to figure that out alone. You can message me and we can talk through what your family actually needs and what would make this feel doable instead of stressful. No pressure, just a conversation to see if it’s a good fit for you.

You are not doing anything wrong if your child struggles in new situations or doesn’t respond the way people expect. I think parents carry a lot of pressure into family photos thinking it has to go a certain way, and that pressure alone can make the whole experience feel heavier than it needs to be. Sessions should feel flexible and supportive, not like something your child has to “get through.”

If family photos have been on your mind but you keep putting it off because you’re not sure how your child would handle it, it’s okay to start with a conversation instead of committing right away. Every family is different and sessions should be planned around what actually works for you, not a one size fits all approach. If you want to talk through it, you can message me anytime and we’ll figure out what feels right for your family.

A lot of parents worry that if their child doesn’t warm up right away the session won’t work, but honestly that’s usually how it starts and it doesn’t mean anything is going wrong. It just means we slow down and meet them where they are instead of expecting something different.

One thing I always tell parents is that the right location can make or break how a session feels, especially for kids who get overwhelmed easily. In St. Louis there are some really great quieter areas if you know where to go, and avoiding the busy high traffic spots can make a huge difference in how your child settles in. Places around Affton, Sunset Hills, and even some less crowded areas in larger parks tend to work really well for giving kids space without too much stimulation. This even is what I tell my parents of seniors that are on the spectrum or just hate photos. find the location that is comfortable to them for example this senior loves the library.

Not every photo has to be everyone smiling at the camera to be worth keeping. Some of the most meaningful images are the ones where your child is just being themselves, even if that means looking away, staying close to you, or doing their own thing. Those moments tell a real story of your family right now and that’s something you don’t get back later.

Be honest with me for a second, when you think about family photos what part stresses you out the most? Is it getting everyone ready, worrying about how your child will do, or just the idea of the whole process feeling overwhelming? I hear so many different answers to this and I think more parents are carrying this stress than we realize.

This session started with a lot of hesitation and honestly a little frustration too. He didn’t want to be there, didn’t want pictures, and stayed completely shut down at first. Instead of trying to turn it around quickly, we just let it be what it was and gave him space. No pressure, no expectations, just time. Slowly things shifted, not into big smiles or perfect poses, but into small moments that actually felt real for him. That’s what matters most because those are the moments families connect to later, not forced ones that never felt right in the first place.
