Tom Gose Photography

Tom Gose Photography All that is great and simple about photography. I grew up in the midwest of the U.S. The career was great but absorbed more of my bandwidth than I had to give.

As a child I was fascinated with dinosaurs, pro wrestling and cookies but, by my teenage years my focus shifted to girls, pro wrestling and cookies. I had more success as an athlete than a student and signed a full football scholarship to Missouri State University where my career started slowly, then tapered off, resulting in career statistics totaling 1 tackle, one fumble recovery and multiple kn

ee surgeries. Upon graduating from college (a surprise in itself) I taught history and served as the high school head coach of three sports for many years. Eventually, the grind had me dreaming of entire weekends spent on the couch so I decided to leave the profession early. Over the next few years, I wrote several books that received good reviews (but not Hollywood's attention...) and took to the stage as a keynote speaker at conventions and events, along with speaking in schools as part of a su***de prevention campaign. As I traveled, I often volunteered at animal sanctuaries in the U.S. and abroad. My knees were licked to oblivion by dogs in Thailand, I've scooped the p**p of young Moose orphans in Alaska, enjoyed the shenanigans of baby elephants and been outwitted by cats at nearly every stop. I won't go into the details of the "donkey flatulence" incident in Peru but I hold no grudge. I admire the people operating rescues and sanctuaries and feel for the stray animals or those who come from rotten homes. My photography sales will help these facilities meet their revenue goals by donating a percentage of the net proceeds of photographs in the hopes that all involved, four-legged or two, have a better life ahead. If you would like to join my email list, please know that I would rather eat a hair in my food than bore my readers (that's not true). I will send you lighthearted, positivity-laced messages about photography with a side order of food, travel, life, people-watching and all the other things we do. All while trying to aid the people who help the critters in need

Especially the donkey with GI issues....

This photo shows the epic Kalalau Valley on Kauai’s northern shore. I took this the easy way, by driving. However, there is a world-famous, treacherous hike stretching 22 miles round trip. Other people take boats out but must swim to shore because boats are not allowed to land on this pristine beach.

Many of the hikers will camp for a day or two in this valley, serenaded by the mountain goats and wild pigs, but all food and water need to be brought in by hikers, which makes long stays challenging.

If you can handle the risk and difficulty of the hike, and hauling supplies, a weekend in this valley would be amazing.

Or you can look at photos of the valley which is much easier….

This sunset photo was taken in Smoky Mountain National Park. This stop in Gatlinburg on the way to Myrtle Beach made me realize I need to spend more time here.

Smoky Mountain National Park is the best attended of all the national parks (who knew) with cool serenity and gobs of history.

And, Gatlinburg dresses itself up very well for Christmas so you may enjoy a road trip there too.

The sunrise sky does it for me in this photo which features a splash around a coconut in the foreground and a cool shot of the ocean doing ocean things.

I was lucky to have daily sunrise shots on Kauai’s eastern shore for over a year and loved Kealia Beach and Lydgate Beach Park for their daily dose of sunrises, sounds, and Vitamin Sea.

Every Hawaiian island has its perks but if you are going to make the considerable financial splash to get there, I highly recommend Kauai.

This week features photos from all over the U.S.

The photo above features a tree known as The McBaine Bur Oak which is nearly 400 years old meaning it sprouted many, many decades before the Salem Witch Trials (1690s AD), about 150 years before the American Revolution (1770s), and 240 years before the Civil War (1860s).

Most importantly, this tree said hello to the sun about 280 years before the first pizzeria opened in the U.S. (1905).

The tree has survived vandalism (sad but not surprising) and lightning but, as the locals call it, '“The Big Tree” still stands guard about a mile from the Missouri River near Columbia, Missouri.

This may be as classic a Colorado scene as you will find. This stream poured downhill in the area near the Continental Divide within Independence Pass. As pretty as the scene was, the sound of the stream was hypnotic too. Add a scent of pine cones and evergreens and I was in no hurry to move along.

These stormy clouds lingered here in Twin Lakes, Colorado. The lakes have several small islands in them on the east end and this spot faced the setting sun in the west.

I prefer more traditionally colorful sunrise or sunset skies but many people like these threatening ones too. They are interesting.

This is an ominous-looking shot due to the storm clouds overhead, looming sunset, and the battered lane lines in the foreground.

Mountains in the background make every photo better too, this shot was taken near Twin Lakes, Colorado on the way toward the famed Independence Pass, which is similar to driving on roller coaster tracks but is an amazing drive so I hope you make it at least once.

On this trip, we traveled across the pass on consecutive days and not only enjoyed it but felt lucky for having the opportunity to..

This photo captures Colorado, and the entire American frontier, very well. This unused old cabin was a unique backdrop to this deer (I think it's a mule deer but he wouldn’t show me an ID…).

For a wild deer, this fella was pretty trusting. He chewed on grass and kept an eye on me but wasn’t as skittish as deer typically are.

I prioritize food No. 1 most of the time too so I understood this guy.

In Colorado last week for my niece’s beautiful wedding, we stayed in a small central Colorado town called Twin Lakes. The Airbnb homes were perched high on a mountain overlooking the two lakes, and on a cloudy, turbulent weather day (perfect for eating constantly….) two openings appeared in the clouds to allow these sun beams through.

The light was a cool contrast to the dark, gray clouds dominating the sky.

It was an amazing week, I hope yours is too.

Have an amazing day!

This final photo features Bug Light again on a brilliant morning with the lighthouse's windows illuminated by the orange glow of The Great Pumpkin of the rising sun.

If Maine interests you as a vacation spot, you will not regret a trip there in early October when the fall colors are like catnip to humans. The midcoast town of Camden has such a tranquil downtown with tree-lined streets stretched out alongside a harbor, it’s hard to beat any time of year but especially in Fall.

This photo shows a ferry boat that leaves Portland very early every morning for nearby islands where people live and shuttles them back to Portland for work, school, shopping, or other antics.

Life on those islands is the definition of serene but during stormy stretches, the ferries may not run for days on end, so a pantry full of Captain Crunch (peanut butter version of course) is needed.

Some of the families living on the islands leave a car on the mainland and another at home so they are always covered, others only have a car at home and use Ubers on the mainland.

I’d love to have a cabin on one of those islands so more exploring needs to happen.

This photo shows Bug Light on a dramatically different morning. Many thanks to Mother Nature for providing the elements needed to capture a moody view of this pint-sized lighthouse.
