Not my usual post on here but

It’s been a year without my not dad, and today I collected the notorious Szekacs drawing that used to hang in his room. This photo will always remind me of his room (along with the notorious throne). Now it’ll live in my classroom for who knows how long.

When Bryan was first diagnosed, I’d visit him and make him tell/teach me about football. He had so much patience for my many, many questions though his response would be, “I literally just explained that.” He broke everything down for me.

In my high school years, he was the first person I’d look for when a game started. Even when he couldn’t be out there, he always made sure to acknowledge me. From “Hey kiddo” “Satan…” or “hey try not to get tackled this game. HA!” Getting back to a field/game has been a challenge.

He’d have me show him my photos on Monday and say, “These are great! Not amazing, but you can’t be amazing if I already am.” Every picture I took somehow became his Gmail photo, followed by, “I suggested you to the seniors… I’d like 60% of the profit.”

He was the one who told me I’d be a teacher. I told him he was insane.

He wasn’t.

“People will question why you do things the way you do or why you care so much. Show up to the job you love, with the people you love around you. They don’t like it? Who cares?”

So I do.

I hope one day I’m someone’s Szekacs. 🤍
