Since the Drury conference, I've had so many conversations with nonprofit leaders who know they have a story — they just don't know where to start. So let me make it simple. A Story Discovery Call is 30 minutes. No pitch. No pressure. Just two people figuring out what story your organization is actually ready to tell and what it needs to do. Year-end season is now. The organizations that start their story work in October are the ones with something powerful in their donors' inboxes by December. Is that you? Link in bio. 🎬

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. 🧡 Something I believe deeply: disability stories are not inspiration stories. They are human stories. They contain joy, complexity, ambition, frustration, love, and everything in between. When we film people with Down syndrome for nonprofit clients, we ask the same thing we ask everyone: What do you want people to understand about your life that they currently don't? The answers are never what you expect. That's the point. Tag an organization doing beautiful work in the Down syndrome community. ⬇️

Deep in a fall edit this week. There's something about October light — even inside a dark edit suite — that makes every frame feel more urgent. Year-end films have a different energy than anything else we make. The stakes are higher. The emotional weight is intentional. The ask at the end matters. We treat that seriously. Every cut. Every music choice. Every word of narration. Because when it lands right, someone opens their wallet and someone's life gets a little better. That's worth getting right.

One thing ethical storytelling requires that no camera can give you: patience. Patience to sit through the answer that takes 20 minutes to arrive. Patience to shoot the third interview when the first two felt "good enough." Patience to let the edit breathe when everyone wants it done yesterday. The organizations we film who understand that timeline get films that last for years. The ones who rush it get a video they stop using in six months. What does patience look like in YOUR work?

One of the things I covered at the Drury conference that I keep coming back to: The difference between extraction and collaboration in storytelling. Extraction: you show up, get what you need, and leave. Collaboration: you show up, listen first, build something together, and share the result back with the community before it's ever published. Both produce a video. Only one produces trust. And only one produces a story the subject will actually share. Which approach does your current filmmaker take?

World Mental Health Day. 💙 This year's theme is a simple and powerful one: mental health is a universal human right. The nonprofits holding that right for their communities — the crisis centers, the peer support networks, the community health workers showing up in living rooms and parking lots — deserve stories told with the same care they give to the people they serve. If you're struggling today, you're not alone. Call or text 988. And if your organization is doing this work — your story matters. More than you know.
