Bisti, and Shiprock, and Chaco, Oh my! New Mexico Nightscapes was another year of very little sleep mixed with a whole lot of ferality and surreality.

If you've never experienced the true darkness of the Bisti Badlands, put it on your to do list! The moonscape formations mixed with the stellar skies makes for some interesting astrolandscapes.

Shiprock has a special energy that can only be felt from being there. It towers over you with a mighty presence, yet is so elegantly placed with the Milky Way core. This place commands respect and admiration.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park is another favorite place in Northwest New Mexico that has a special energy and such rich history. Getting to wander the ruins after hours with no one else around really feels like stepping back in time over 1,000 years. Laying under the stars, you can almost picture what life must’ve been like when more than 6,000 people who called this place home, moving through the structures and thriving for centuries on agriculture and trade.

The last star tracking workshop filled up way too fast, and a bunch of you missed getting a spot… so I'm running it again.

Join me Memorial Weekend at the Buffalo River for another round of chasing the Milky Way and learning how to track the stars like a pro. We’ll be out under some of the darkest skies in the state, dialing in astro trackers and capturing those clean, low-ISO stellar shots, and playing with creative filters too!

There's a reason I scheduled two workshops here this year...because once you experience the Valley, you never forget it. It sticks to you, just like the red dirt.

Sometimes the best moments on a road trip come from a last-minute swerve. On my way out home from Vegas, I decided to veer off to Southeast Utah and do a little impromptu scouting for some upcoming workshops… and it was the best decision ever.

The desert floor was alive with scorpionweed adding these wild pops of color, and as if that wasn’t enough, a handful of hot air balloons drifted through the valley while I was drinking my coffee the next morning. Totally surreal.

I've learned to expect the unexpected in the desert. This stop ended up being very fruitful.

There's something about the Arizona stretch of Route 66 that feeels like you stepped straight into the 60s. It's a total vibe. So I leaned into it full force and gave these edits a vintage style to match.

Got some big news....I've been asked by several folks for awhile to do this, soooo here it goes! My merch store is officially LIVE! This means you can now rock branded workshop gear, astro inspired designs, and most importantly, let people know you're part of the FERAL gang.

You'll also notice an astronaut theme sprinkled throughout some of the designs...there's a backstory...

When you are in the desert, you learn how to expect the absolute unexpected. Like the one time I was sitting alone in complete darkness at Alien Throne in the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness waiting for the Milky Way to get into position when all of a sudden an astronaut in a full suit saunters around the corner and asks if I'd seen his friends. My only response was "What year do you think this is?" because I was convinced I just met a time traveler. Turns out he was just a photographer actually looking for his friends, but became my favorite stellar story to tell.

Also, after every workshop, I'm now going to do a contest where one attendee will have their image featured on a custom cup in the store 🥳 So if you've joined me on a workshop, are planning to, or just want strangers questioning your fashion sense, there's something in there for you. Still kind of processing this one… Over the weekend, I got the call and I’ve officially been invited to join the Nightscaper Conference crew and will be giving a Canon -sponsored presentation 🙌

I’ll be speaking on Blending Time With Astrophotography, one of my favorite techniques that really brings night scenes to life.

The date couldn’t be more stellar. It all happens just hours before my New Mexico Nightscapes tour kicks off (one spot just opened up btw)... Talk about cosmic timing!
