Meet Jordan of Glow Financial - another local business in need of some photos for his new website. Unlike Debbie of Mother Earth Healing, Jordan would not be shaking any eagle feather. But like Debbie, he wanted his photos to show something different for his business. He wanted to show that his financial planning business wasn’t what people typically thought of, “a stiff setting with a person in a suit behind a desk” and he wanted this relaxed approach to come through in the photos. We also worked in a family portrait session, so Jordan could also show this side of his life and have some good photos of his family in the process. It was a pleasure meeting Jordan, his wife and their son, and I think a good time was had by all. We got some good business photos, some great family photos, and nobody had to sit stiffly behind a desk in a suit! Go team! And thanks Jordan!

Since it's Labor Day how about celebrating the people doing the work of building their businesses. Woot woot!
Debbie needed photos that felt like her business Earth Mother Healing. She’s a Reiki Master, certified to teach qigong and Kai Chi Do, and her work centers around wellness, energy work and qigong. Which meant getting outside, getting into the trees, doing some Kai Chi Do, and avoiding anything that looked like she was about to sell me life insurance. Or a car. No offense to anyone in these businesses, but that isn’t the look of Earth Mother Healing.
That's one of my favorite things about branding photography. I get to figure out what makes sense for your business.
Sometimes it's a polished headshot, or your workspace or your family. Sometimes you're standing in the Florida woods shaking an eagle feather.

When I finish the edits on a wedding, I separate them into categories before sending to the client. One section labeled “Details,” contains all the unique additions that have been included in their wedding day. This could be decor, special clothes, a hand-made sign. There is meaning behind these items; Sometimes this meaning is obvious, and sometimes it's a shared joke between the couple. Here are some of my favorites - a message to the bride's father sewn into his jacket which she revealed to him before walking down the aisle (he cried, I cried, she remained cool.) A fire hose stretched out on display to be used as the couples guest book, both of them were firefighters. A custom made jacket that was given to the bride by her bridesmaids. A recreation of the sign the bride’s grandfather had up when he was getting married many many years before. A pin that served as a subtle nod to horses, something shared between the bride and groom. And Viking horns used for the reception toast for a Viking-themed wedding. While it’s important to finalize the playlist, determine the seating arrangement and decide if you need umbrellas (if your wedding is coming up soon and you’re in Florida, yes. Yes you do.) I think it’s even more important to spend some time adding in some special details. This is what will make the wedding day, your wedding day.

The big family photo matters.

And so do the moments.

The grandparents and cousins and all the side conversations. They traveled, coordinated outfits, cleared schedules, and showed up because being together matters.

Ooorrr, in this case, because a family portrait was the anniversary gift request from the two people at the center of this crew. Married for 60 years, they are the parents to some, grandparents to some, great-grandparents to some (and probably a few titles I’m forgetting.)

When everyone is already in one place, it is worth taking the time for a real family portrait. Something better than a quick phone photo.

And something everyone can keep.

If your family is gathering this summer, this might be your sign to finally get it on the calendar. Or if you want to be the cool cousin and offer it as a gift. My pro tip for the day. (You’re welcome.)
