Interested in trying something a little different?
I’m looking for a few people interested in collaborating with me on a portrait project inspired by Kansas City photographer Orval Hixon and other early studio photographers.
The examples here show the look I’m after—simple portraits, dramatic lighting, expressive faces, and a warm vintage finish.
You don’t need to be a model. I’d like to photograph men and women, younger and older, and couples. Interesting faces and personality are much more important to me than modeling experience.
You’ll notice the examples are bare-shouldered. That’s simply a way of removing modern clothing from the image and keeping the attention on the face and expression. This is portraiture, not erotic or sexual photography, and nudity is not required. We can accomplish the look with off-the-shoulder clothing, draping, or by keeping everything outside the frame covered.
These will be collaborative/TFP sessions in the Kansas City area, so you’ll receive finished photographs in exchange for your time.
I’m also creating these with a possible portrait issue of a photography magazine in mind for early next year. Publication isn’t guaranteed, and I’d discuss any submission with you beforehand.
If this looks like something you—or you and your partner—might enjoy, send me a message and we can talk about it. No modeling experience necessary.
