Things I would tell my younger self. It’s a waste of precious energy to put importance on being “original”. you will rationalize yourself into not making (or sharing)anything at all.

What we perceive as originality is inspiration that’s been individualized (NOT plagiarized- you know better). Everything has creative lineage.

Even David Bowie sponged from the human web of creativity. Collect as much inspiration as you can- that includes making space in your day to download from your own internal muse. She whispers so make sure to take your headphones off

Say PRINT for a list of supplies. Every Sunday I do my weekly ritual where I plan my week, and get on top of my digital hoarding by cleaning out my phone. I also take this time to print my weekly faves for family photo albums and sometimes I also turn them into Polaroid emulsions to glue inside.

Ive been creating these for years as part of personal art projects and bonus: they’re extremely satisfying to make

What you need:

-watercolor paper
-paintbrush
-endless patience
-NEWER Polaroids (old Polaroids sometimes won’t fully lift and that’s sad for everyone)

Anyway-

Makenzy was the ultimate autumn bride. Her wedding was even in a haunted fort (I fled in the night) with the ceremony taking place in the old theater. She DIY’d the whole situation with her best friends.

Makenzy’s Victorian vibe Port Townsend wedding includes some of my favorite photos I’ve ever made of a bride getting ready.

Biggest mistake in thinking is that the photographic process starts when the camera is in hand. I do a TON of backend prep work to crystalize exactly what my clients want their photos to feel like, what their threshold is for play/experimentation and where they have resistance/insecurity/boundaries.

Creative symbiosis is a process that is built through mutual trust. My clients and I take all the steps to create TOGETHER so the story feeeeels like them.

In home sessions are my preferred engagement photo method (these are from my Austin workshop).

I often have to talk my people into using their own home for photos because we’ve all been influenced into believing what we have isn’t aesthetic enough or photo worthy.

Your home- the space where you have your most loving, mundane, meaningful, angry moments of your life- is actually THE perfect backdrop to the visual beginning of your wedding story.

Things will change- you will move away or remodel but always be able to look to the photos and remember that first little rental house with the sh*tty yellow tile where life together took root.

This is what is looks like when a NASA genius marries a surgical oncologist(who is also a pilot 👀). Two of THE coolest, nicest humans ever. I win.

They had a live painter at their intimate, elegant wedding at beautiful San Ysidro Ranch where they also got engaged (fun fact: Hailee Steinfeld had also just been married there)
