The barn-a-holic in me is on a rampage. This is a scene I captured in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado one early morning - the San Juan Mountains to be exact. This scene carries a bit of history as it was used in the opening and closing scenes of the 1969 film starring John Wayne - yes True Grit!

Just sharing one more time - this was the first of two full moons in May. I entered it into an international photo competition and it placed 2nd out of 1911 other entries...many of which blew me away. So, very grateful on this Wednesday morning. Thanks for your follows, shares, and love of outdoor photography. BJ

Sparks Lake lights up in Central Oregon. Early mornings and sunsets can present many moods and colors as Oregon's late Photographer Laureate Ray Atkeson once noted. Ray sought to find the soul of Sparks and the Cascade mountain landscapes - making his coffee table photo books extremely popular. I wish I could have photographed with him and learned from him. I was thinking of Ray when I took these photos of his favorite Oregon landscape Sparks Lake. Ray Atkeson - 1907-1990.

The many moods of Sparks Lake in Oregon's Central Cascades in early morning. Sparks Lake has no outlet - waters just seep down into the ground and lava rock. When Mt. Bachelor erupted 10,000 years ago; geologists believe the lava flows formed a rock dam confining the melting waters from Bachelor and surrounding mountains.

Having lived my entire life in the Pacific Northwest, I never tire of our great Cascade mountain peaks. While mountains like Rainier, St. Helens, Adams, Hood, the Three Sisters, and others stand out, Mt. Jefferson seems to be left behind. I love this mountain and this blue hour image from last fall. On an Alaska flight over to Portland years ago, the pilot decided to buzz the ridges and top of the mountain. It was one of those moments! Enjoy our mountains.

The Washington State Ferry system is the largest in the U.S. Its boats transport 20 million people annually and are a major economic driver. This year, the system celebrates 75 years under state operation. But its history dates back to 1898 when a few boats were known as the 'Mosquito Fleet'. Each ferry has a unique sounding horn which is routinely heard by millions around the Puget Sound region. I once used that sound as our radio station ID at KVI, Seattle. Hats off to these Puget Sound ferries and the hundreds of workers who keep our lives moving. Below are some of my favorite ferry pics - I have taken over the years.
