Happy 2024! As we enter this new year, I have some bittersweet news: I'm pausing Alyssa Koster Photography in order to focus my time and energy on my own family.

I've greatly enjoyed getting to know so many amazing families. It has meant a lot to witness and document your love, joy, and the unique ways you express what family means to you.

Your support and trust have gotten me where I am today, and I'm so grateful for what I've been able to accomplish so far. I truly hope to be back at what I love in the future.

Happy Father's Day! ❤

I've heard many times among family photographers that dads seem to be begrudgingly involved in family portrait sessions. They'd rather be anywhere else, but their significant others insisted on family photos again. That has never been my experience.

All the dads I know see the importance of any time spent with their families and are just as involved in the sessions as their significant others and children. Keep it up, dads! You're awesome!

Moms, it's SO important for you to get in the photos! Whether they're professional portraits or everyday cell phone pics, your family wants you included in their preserved memories. And they want and love you as you are right now! Don't be absent in photos until you lose those 15 pounds or until you look perfectly put together. You mean so much more to your family than that. ❤

My #1 tip for family sessions is:

👉Let everyone be themselves. 👈

Even if that includes toddler meltdowns, rambunctious behavior, or teen moodiness. Don't aim for some idealized, polished, "well-behaved" version of your family. Enjoy being with everyone as they are right now. If you let go, breathe, and focus on connecting genuinely with your family, everyone will have a great experience.

Family sessions with young children require a bit more preparation for a smooth and fun experience for everyone. But even after you prepare them to the best of your ability, remember: Kids aren't expected to be perfect models! Let their silly, goofy, rambunctious personalities shine! In my time as a family photographer, and a nanny for 6 years before that, I've seen it all and can handle it. 😀

📖Story time📖 I was in one of my favorite local print shops recently and overheard a conversation with the owner and a customer. They were discussing how the customer's prints turned out (she didn't like them) and how to change things so that they would print how she preferred. I'm guessing this conversation, tweaking the digital files, and reprinting (and possibly doing all that a few times) took much more time than the customer was planning on spending to print her pictures.

This is not the print shop or the owner's fault. It's a good quality place where they know what they're doing (not a place like Walgreens or Walmart where the employees simply push buttons and know very little about the craft of printing).

Printing pictures that turn out with accurate colors, tones, etc. requires more than just taking a file that looks good on the computer screen and sending it to be printed. That's why I suggest hiring a photographer who has experience with printing their work and does so for clients. It's why I think it's a disservice to simply hand my clients the digitals and leave it there. I don't want to leave you with extra work that will take up your precious time. I want to take everything related to your family portraits off your plate, not leave you with a to-do list after the session.

Including sentimental items in your session makes it extra personal and unique. In this case, not only did this family have items, but they also created a new tradition with one of them: Ringing their old school bell when they found their Christmas tree!

I love when client orders arrive in time for Christmas and I get to be Santa. 🎄😊

I've posted before on the importance of printing your family pictures, but it's also important to have your photographer be the one to do the printing for you. I believe it's actually a disservice to my clients to merely hand them the digitals and leave it there. I'll post more on that later, but here's a blog post if you want to learn more:
