The backside of the ADM Mill in Spokane, WA. This shot was taken from Playfair Commerce Park, just across a few sets of railroad tracks.
Playfair Commerce Park has a bit of history, going back well over a hundred years. The 60 acre location wedged between railroad tracks was one of the first locations for the Spokane Interstate Fair in 1901. They had a 1/2 mile dirt track that was used for automotive as well as horse racing. In the 1930s, the Spokane Fair moved to it's current location, and the property became Playfair Race Course. The dirt track was lengthened, and hosted horse races all the way through the end of the 20th century, entertaining an estimated 15 million people.
Due to declining interest, the track was sold in 2000, and traded hands a couple times before becoming Playfair Commerce Park in 2010. Today there are several warehouses built on the land, and there are large metal horses at the entrances, a tribute to days gone by.
The large mill in the photo is one of 2 surviving and operated mills in Washington State. Originally built in 1939, it was owned by Centennial Mills until 1981, when Centennial Mills was bought by ADM.
