Children can be intense.

Some are all smiles and jubilant giggles. Some are more serious and even camera shy. I've been a photographer for over a decade, photographed thousands of children, I've seen it all.

I allow them to just be. Be themselves. Be with their parents.

I don't make kids smile. I don't make anyone smile. I love the intense, intimate pictures the most. And to get those, I just let things unfold. No pressure, no stress.

Why should you book a maternity session in addition to your newborn session?

While I do believe pictures serve as a reminder of the season before your baby is born, honor the changes you're going through and celebrate the new baby you're welcoming into your family. I do think there's something else to consider in booking your maternity session.

A maternity session allows you to get to know your photographer and get comfortable. Early postpartum can feel vulnerable and inviting a stranger into your postpartum space can be unsettling. The maternity session is a great way for your whole family to build a relationship with your photographer in a more casual setting.

One of the most common questions that I am asked is how I handle blended families, and my answer is simple: just like I handle any other family.

I treat everyone like everyone is family. I have the parents cuddle and snuggle all the kids like they are their own, because they are. Blended families are beautiful, because they are chosen families.

And don’t worry, I honor everyone's comfort level always and I ask about your family dynamics in my onboarding process. I never walk into a session blind.

Babies don't need to be asleep for newborn photos. It's actually quite rare that any of the babies I photograph are asleep and to be truthful, they're usually fussy. It's normal and that's why I keep the parents heavily involved in my process.

A behind the scenes video of a studio newborn session popped into my feed the other day and I couldn't bear to watch it. There were so many unsafe practices happening in a clip in under 30 seconds.

Many studio photographers take babies away from their mothers to "soothe", over feed, over heat and use very unsafe and unnatural poses.

My process does not use any of these methods and it never will. Babies belong in their parents arms to be soothed and they are perfect exactly as they are, asleep or awake.

In case you needed the nudge to get your newborn photos taken...

Newborn photos with me double as family photos. Your whole immediate family gets to be in the photos. We use your home as the studio. We capture moments that are a bit more intimate because they are within your four walls, preserving the season of life perfectly.

You can relax and feel comfortable because it's your space. No packing up and driving to a studio in the city. You get to relax on the sofa with your family when it's over. Your toddler can get a snack in the middle. Everything your baby needs is right there.

I might be biased, but to me, this is the only way. I believe so deeply in what I do, friends. This matters.

It's spring time and that means everything is GREEN. Here's the top colors I recommend wearing during the spring.

Pure & creamy whites
Navy & light blues Minty green charcoal brown leather
Denim
Gray
Light tan
Small, pops of other colors like lavender, pink, mustard yellow, salmon-y red- not whole outfits, but items with patterns with these colors

Wear plenty of neutrals to keep good contrast and make sure everything has somewhat of a cool tone. Think cool and crisp.

Hey Spokane families- It’s time to book those family photos. I know, I know life is busy, but if we’re lucky, we only get 18 summers at home with our kids.

Each year, they grow and separate from us just a little bit more. I feel the pinch of it too, every summer. Book the photos while they’re small and want to sit on your lap. Book the photos while they still ask “mama, what’s that?” Book the photos while they’re still small enough to hug your leg.

These days with them, don’t last and they just go too fast.
