“I heard a bird sing in the dark of December,

A magical thing and sweet to remember.

We are nearer to spring than we were in September.

I heard a bird sing in the dark of December.”

Therefore with thy soft breath come floating by
A thousand images of Love and Grief,

Dreams, fill'd with tokens of mortality,
Deep thoughts of all things beautiful and brief.

Last week, I had the honor of capturing my sister and her beloved rescue, Buddy, up until the day before he passed.

He was 14.

Buddy had had a rough life before he met my sister. No one to claim him. However, he still was his playful self.

Like all living beings, especially dogs, he just wanted to love and be loved.

Buddy and my sister just clicked after she met him at a rescue kennel she once worked at. He quickly became her sidekick, her best friend, and her fierce protector.

There was a time when she had a medical emergency there at the kennel with no one around. She had collapsed. Buddy kept her alert by licking her face until help could come. And, when help did come, he fought them off at first, not letting them get near her, because he thought, seeing her lying on the ground, she needed his protection.

She took him home after that.

For the next 7 years, he finally had the life he wanted, where he could give unconditional love and have it returned.

He was finally able to have a full, beautiful life, all thanks to my sister.

After experiencing this kind of pain of losing a beloved animal more times than I’d like to count, it’s something that I most definitely wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy.

However, the pain does lessen as time goes on, and you remember and cherish the memories.

To experience the unconditional love an animal gives, no matter who you are, what you look like, or how depressed you are. . . They don’t care. They love you for you. There is truly nothing like it.

Suddenly, anxious thoughts begin to subside.

And you’re ok.

The power of Jehovah’s creation that humbles us and teaches us important lessons every day.

We live on just over 4 acres, with a sliver of forest.

I discovered these wild roses last year. I caught them in bloom two weeks ago, harvested some of the flowers to dry.

They’re very fragrant, but not the classic rose; it’s more of a thick musky, sweet scent.

They will make a lovely nervine tea & an infused oil.

This is Wild Rose.

From the Rose Garden

It’s rose-harvesting season in the garden, my favorite flower. I make tea & rose water from them, especially from this one - it originally belonged to my great-grandmother.

For a long time now, I’ve been incredibly inspired by still life.

Some days are dark for me, like a heavy cloud looming, & I reach for the earth.

I go back “home” every year now.
I’ve made my own tradition every autumn to visit the place that helped mold me - to reminisce, to feel grounded.

I hike a trail along the Catawba river, rewarded at the end by these cascading waters over a 100ft tall.

I drive past my great-grandparent’s old farmhouse, remembering their garden & apple trees. And a cute, yapping chihuahua she had once.

I visit Papa’s grave.
I always check on it when I can.

I still vividly remember some of the last words he said to me. Isn’t that something?

I take a peek at the unique cottage that was once theirs. He had built it for Gramma & him all those years ago, now owned by complete strangers.

It’s funny what memories & time will do to you.

Am I holding on to old memories, dwelling too much in the past? Maybe. I’m super sentimental.
But I always feel better after visiting, so it must be a good thing.

I am rebranding.

I’m here.
I have found solace in nature, especially recently, spending more time on my other page of botanicals.

Life has been . . . interesting.
I’ve been juggling some things, including businesses.

But creation is my haven - mentally, physically.

Everyone needs & should have an outlet.

I haven’t forgotten my love to freeze time with a lens though.

I am in the middle of doing a bit of rebranding, a bit of letting go. 🌲

A shout-out to the ones who have supported all of me all of this time . . .
from my absence, to showing love on my other page.

You know who you are.

Looking forward to new things ahead.

🌸 “My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird—
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young, and still half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be
astonished.
The phoebe, the delphinium.
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here,

which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart
and these body-clothes,
a mouth with which to give shouts of joy
to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,
telling them all, over and over, how it is
that we live forever.”

Sending a huge congratulations to this gorgeous, young woman. I'm so honored she chose me to document this moment in her life, as I've known her since she was just a little girl.

She was an absolute dream to work with, & a natural model.

Congratulations, class of 2021!

It's alllll downhill from here. LOL! Kidding!
