What happens when a hurricane interrupts an engagement session?

Plans went out the window for Amy & Roberts engagement session when a devastating hurricane swept through the Carolinas last month. The location we had planned on was completely cut off by downed trees and with most of the Upstate area without power, we had to pivot. When I called Amy to discuss possible back up plans, we discussed a few locations that “could” work, both knowing the original mountain top location wouldn’t be beat. Delaying the session by a few weeks seemed the best plan even if we had to settle for one of the backup locations.

Days before the reschedule engagement session, I saw hiking logs that showed the original location was accessible once again! Our original plan was able to happen and the best part: the leaves were closer to peak colors due to the delay.

Through it all, Amy & Robert were so flexible and understand! They weren’t worry about whether they got their top pick in location or not as they knew just being together and having their love documented was what mattered most.

This same attitude I’ve seen repeatedly after the hurricane hit: people focused less on their desires of things to go perfectly and instead on just being together (be it at church, with friend, or with family). It’s been an emotionally exhausting time for everyone but the flexibility, kindness, and grit has helped everyone continue to push through and hope for brighter days.

Have you thought about who will officiate your wedding? Depending on your state, there's lots of options!

- Ask your current or childhood pastor. If your faith and relationship journey has been supported and impacted by a pastor, it can be meaningful to have them perform the ceremony.

- Ask a friend or family member. Some states allow online ordination which means even if your loved one is not an ordained minister, they could get the necessary credentials to marry you.

- Choose to self-solemnize. If you're planning to elope with just the two of you or for whatever reason cannot decide on who to officiate your wedding, some states allow for self-solemnization (not needing a third-party officiant.) Even if your state does not allow self-solemnization or online ordination, you can always go to your local court house ahead of time to get legally married there and afterwards so what you desire at your ceremony. This especially is helpful if you're getting married in a different state or country.

Time for a vote!

Which edit do you like better? Black & White or Full Color?

One of the last things I do when finishing editing a gallery is choosing which images to include a black & white copy. I'll convert every image to grayscale and go through the images to see which ones jump out at me as I believe black & white images should be used as an artistic choice and not a default. After all, scientifically, our eyes are attracted to color more than grays so only photos can stand on their own without color should be converted.

A photo can jump out by being:

- Full of emotion
- Stunning but with a distracting color in the background
- Feature strong shadows or streams of light
- Include motion or intentional shutter drag
- Timeless in giving off a vibe of being from any decade

So how do you think I did with this one? 😄

I'm loving this trend of taking a studio backdrop outside during a wedding day for portraits! Sunset photos are always a delight but adding in the element of studio vibes makes for wedding pictures like no other.

I love to be present enough so that when you’re in front of my camera, you won’t feel clueless about what to do but at the same time I’ll fade into the background so that you almost forget I’m there because you’re so in the moment with your loved ones.

This is exactly how client after client share their experiences.

A wedding day can fly by, even if the focus is on intentionality, so making sure I’m not a distraction to you experiencing all that the day has to offer while being there to guide at just the right moments whenever needed is my goal.

When people ask me if I do family sessions, I always reply with a resounding yes!

Connecting with couples and capturing the love they share isn’t all that different from doing the same with families. Yes, there’s a few more people involved but that just means there’s more opportunities for laughter and joy. Just as I love encouraging couples to embrace the “lifestyle” photography vibe (a session built around capturing doing life together), lifestyle family sessions can be just as special as smiles are genuine and excitement abounds.

Help me break the notion that gorgeous photos only come from a wedding day!

While I love shooting weddings and elopements, I feel so sad when I’m talking to friends and they mention the only time they got wall-worthy, canvas-ready photos was on their wedding day.

For starters, you don’t need to wait until you get married or in a relationship! Whatever season of life you are in right now is worth remembering.

That move across the state to a new area: why not capture photos of you enjoying your new home and town?

Crossed a important milestone: wouldn’t an adventure session be a perfect way to celebrate?

If you need a reason to book a session, take this as you sign! Seriously, get those Instagram perfect images but also walk away with so much more: a time of confidence, celebration, love, and memories.

Since we didn't get any snow here in South Carolina this year, looking back on photos from Zion National Park is the best I can do.

Are you a fan of snow? Having grown up in the south, I always loved snow and even after living in Michigan for a couple years, I still found I was always excited to see it falling. It can definitely change up your plans but so can ice so if given the choice, snow would be my pick anytime!
