The Fujifilm X M-5 mirrorless camera was used to snap this pic of my friend Dennis Custer. The in camera skin softening was set to ‘strong’. I mounted a Sirui f/1.2 16 mm prime lens on it and blurred the background nicely. Bokeh. And yet focus was tack sharp.

Filming is photography but it has its own distinct techniques. This is a rough cut over the shoulder scene. Two guys at a table.mone guy

To enhance or not to enhance? I shoot RAW so each image I take must be adjusted in Post Production. Do I sharpen, adjust lighting, contrast and shadows? Yes. Do I remove blemishes, wrinkles, bags under eyes? Eh, sometimes. The way I see it is that it’s the end result that counts. If my photograph is pleasing to my eye then enhancements are fine. Ansel Adams worked hard in the darkroom on all of his pics.

I am having a horrible time transition from still photography using a DSLR to filming with one. The problem is focus. Let’s say I’m filming an interview between two people. They are seated behind a table on roughly the same plane. I focus on one or the other and use f/13. Plenty of depth of field, right? And yet if one or the other begins gesturing or talking with their hands it throws my camera into a focus finding dilemma. It struggles with focus and makes noise while doing it. Anyone have solutions or suggestions.

64 ISO RAW on a Nikon D-850? Sure, but that 45 MP sensor makes for huge file sizes! Sometimes I like to process pics in the field. Recently I shot an event with those settings and the pics were too large for my iPad to import all 100 pics.

Kinda cool this day. High 70°F. Tomorrow high 50°F! Where are my long pants?! More lighting testing today. Nobody but nobody wants to learn photography. Cell phones good enough, eh. "Pity the fools"—Mr. T.

The Mode Dial. Scary….not really. If you turn the dial to the white circle with a lightning bolt with a slash through it that’s the automatic without flash setting. To use the flash on auto turn to the green Auto with flash choice. Other modes depicted as graphics are kinda self descriptive. Sports, portraits, kids, flowers are all choices that A.I. does the choosing for you.
M is for Manual. You make all settings choices. A is for Aperture priority. You choose the Aperture and the camera does the rest. S is for Shutter Speed priority. You choose the shutter speed you want and the camera does the other settings. P is for Program mode. More on this later. Guide, Scene, Effects later as well. Some cameras have a bottom ring of choices. Burst mode, timer, etc. I discuss those later as well. For now put your camera on Auto and go shoot shoot shoot. This may be all you need.
