This is a Green Anemone (Anthoopleura xanthogrammica). I photographed this at Olympic National Park in Washington State at Ruby Beach. It is a large predatory marine invertebrate found in the rocky tide pools of the Pacific coast of North America. It can live up to 150 years in the wild but only about half of that in captivity. It uses its stinging tentacles called nematocysts to paralyze their prey, then surround them to eat them. They primarily eat crabs, mussels, sea urchins and small fish. This was shot at low tide while it was still completely submerged.

Here is one from the archives. I did my undergraduate thesis on Sports Photography while attending the College for Creative Studies. This would be around 1975. I did a lot of work back in the days when Detroit had their own professional tennis team. They played at Cobo Hall. The league was sponsored by Virginia Slims ci******es. This is Margaret Court serving at one of the matches.

This is Xiao Jackson modeling at Midwest photography Workshops wearing a hand crafted mask that I purchased in Venice years ago. The black mask and the black background contribute to the mystery of the model (Except that I actually told you her name).

Kai Nipper and his parents wanted a different kind of senior portraits as he was about to graduate from high school. He was a strong acedemic student who was shy, but very talented. So we went to an abanonded building in Detroit for the shoot. As we tried to spice up his shy personality, I asked him to unbutton his shirt to give us that rock star persona. I knew it would make him uncomfortable, but what a difference it made to the emotional content of the photo! He ended up liking this photo the best. I drove by the building one week later and the building was gone.

Linda and I were driving through Arizona just outside of Flagstaff. We pulled to the side of the road to meet this mountain man giving his mules a rest from pulling the wagon into town. He lives as a hermit and goes into town twice a year for supplies. We were intrigued by his persona and attitude.

This is the Alpine Lake I believed to be Lake Thompson in Glacier National Park in Montana. The design is made by using rocks and boulders in the foreground to provide a 3-D depth to the mountians on the other side of the lake. It was peaceful and serene.

Linda and I went to Philadelphia and did the normal tourist thing. My full name is Bryce Ross Denison Jr. My middle name of Ross is from one of my ancestors; Betsy Ross. Legend has it that she was asked by George Washington to sew the first American flag for him and our country. The sewing was done before she got married and changed her name. We even visited the historic home of Betsy Ross and they actually let me in for free because of my ansestry. This is her headstone.

I enjoy traveling to meet new and interesting people. With a chance to shoot a photograph of them is even better. The key in telling a story with your photograph is to make the photograph active and not passive. He is a broom maker at the Oconnolufte Mountain farm in Cherokee, NC at the Smokie Mountains National Park. Put something in the subjects hands to assist in telling the story and to help prevent the image from being passive. Photo by Bryce Denison

Congratulations to my cousin Terry and her husband Leo on their 50th Wedding anniversary celebration yesterday. It is good to visit with family. Few of us get to enjoy each others company enough. Life gets in the way.

Even though the Tigers lost last Friday, the evening was a blast! (Small pun intended). Prior to the first pyrotechnics shot off, the expectations were average at best. Displaying only three small wagons in center field, we were thinking "How good could they be?" We were amazed. The display was bright, colorful, loud and entertaining. Nearing the end of the display, they had four lulls only to lure the audience into the thinking we are about to see the finale. The first three times what looked like the frenzy of a finale were there to confuse and entertain. The fourth surge of firing a whole bunch at the same time was actually the finale. Congratulations to the Tigers for not allowing the audience to slip into complacency. By the way, the fireworks with the city scape in the background was a delight for the eyes.
