Around 1500 BC, Euclid (yes of Geometry fame) wrote a book called The Elements. In it he proposed that the ideal shape of objects was four units wide by three units tall. He believed that everything in life could be made better with mathematics (sculpture, painting, architecture and more). His theory became known as the Golden Mean. We know it now as the rule of thirds. In this theory, there are four "power spots" in which artist will place the main subject matter, but SELDOM in the center of the image. He used a chambered nautilus as his guide. That part of his theory became known as the golden spiral. This staircase in Portugal exemplifies that theory as the handrail becomes a leading line to the main subject matter (not placed in the center) is one third of the distance from the side and one third of the distance from the bottom. Artists have been using this as one of their design examples for hundreds of years to this day.

I teach a wildlife workshop in Costa Rica every couple of years. My wife Linda is a naturalist and enjoys catching lizards, frogs and turtles for everyone to photograph. She caught this frog (Gaudy Red-Eyed Green Leaf Frog) and I placed it upon a plant. It tried to escape thinking "This giant caught me and is going to eat me". While I had no intention of eating it; I am sure that is what it was thinking. After the sixth time of trying to escape and being put back upon the same plant, it finally gave up and just posed for my camera until it fell asleep. I used a 200 mm macro lens, not because of its ability to get close, but to give me working distance so as not to frighten the poor frog. After a few minutes, It fell asleep and we went on to our next photographic adventure.

I photographed weddings and portraits for fifty of my fifty eight years in photography. I am grateful that I don't need to do that anymore. But I did enjoy sharing my expertise to serve the needs of others. Here is a happy college grad jumping for joy. To photograph her just standing with cap and gown would be boring. Find a way in your photos to make the subject active.

In 2007 Linda and I went to Basque del Apache National Wildlife Preserve in southern most New Mexico. It is where over 6,000 Sandhill cranes and 60,000 Snow geese winter. Great Bird photography occurs there! But since it is in the desert, there are Cholla Cactus. I photographed this specimen backlit just before sunset. This cactus blooms from April to June with greenish white to yellow/red flowers.

Back in the day, when you had to trespass to enter the Michigan Central Train Station; back in the day when the building was a shinning example of "Urban Decay", photographers would go inside and find wonderful backgrounds and environments to make fine art photographs. I love Black and White images much more than color image (usually). So I met a young aspiring model by the name of Tania (Her real name). Walking through the rooms and corridors, we ran across this spray paint graffiti. From the lyrics of a Rolling Stones song "I see a red door and I want it painted black". The graffiti spoke to use so we shot some images there.

Burrowing Owls are just a little bigger than a Robin. They have been known to dig a nest or burrow under ground to live and raise their family. Occasionally they will appropriate a hole dug a snake or prairie dog. Once inside the burrow, they may hiss to sound like a snake and discourage intruders. But if they do have to dig their own burrows, they have disproportionately long legs to dig with. With such long legs, they can capture prey by flying or running. They often eat insects, invertebrates and some small rodents. This Burrowing Owl was photographed in 2022 in Florida just before sunset.

Greek, Roman and Norse mythology provide us with great literature and stories which can be a descent reflection of who we are as people. This is Bacchus. (Also considered the Roman equivalent to the Greek god as Dionysis). Bacchus is a Roman god primarily associated with wine, agriculture, and fertility. He was also the patron of the arts and the protector of the theater. Most photographers understand that depth of field sharpness can be controlled by adjusting the f/stop or aperture. Most photographers do not understand that f/stop is not the most powerful way to adjust depth of field (DOF). Focal length is. If you wish to blur out your background more rapidly, stand farther away and use a more telephoto lens. The longer focal length can put the background out of focus more powerfully than f/stop.

Light by itself tends to be invisible unless it has something to illuminate or reflect from. Such is the case here in Page, AZ in the Antelope canyon. It is a slot canyon often about six feet wide and over 100 yards long. Once per day just around noon, there is a shaft of light that can be made visible by throwing fine sand into the air so the light shaft can illuminate something. Linda stood behind the big rock on the left and three sand into the air so this photograph could be made. The canyon was sculpted by eons of erosion from water, wind and ice. It is on the Navajo Indian Reservation. They no longer permit the use of tripods here as it interrupts the flow of tourist, but that is ok give the advancement of technology and the ability to raise the ISO without all the bad noise typical of older DSLR cameras.

2004. Linda and I visited a Fishing village in Venice, La. Most of the shrimp boats were still in the marina. We walked up and down the docks looking for interesting subject matter. We found this man taking a break from washing his boat. He spoke about how poor the fishing was as most fishermen are want to do. Mostly what we saw were some rusty old fishing boats and a couple of characters like this guy.

In 2003, I was straddling the divide between shooting film and shooting digital. This is one of the last images I had made using film. This is a dairy farmer making his daily trek to the market in the Azores. The Azores are a group of volcanic islands 1500 miles off the coast of Portugal. The islands are beautiful and rustic. The people are warm and friendly. The food revolves around the fishing industry. Nikon F-4 Camera, 24-120mm lens at 120mm, f/8, 1/125 sec. Fujichrome slide film ISO 50 scanned.

When Linda and I go on vacation, we tend to listen to books on tape (or CD). It is great stimulation for my ears, but not my eyes. I'm looking out the window at all the scenery going by. We were returning home from New Orleans. We zoomed by this white unknown object. Curious, we turned around and discovered this guy. We stopped to meet him. I asked him "Whatch ya doin?" He replied "I'm takin my cross for a walk for the cause." I asked "What cause is that?" "Cause I have no money." We donated to his cause so we could shoot his photo. This evangelist walks from Baton Rouge north along the highway until he gets to the state line, turns around and then walks back back home. Rinse and repeat. As a photographer, do not be afraid to walk up to total strangers and ask "Whatch ya doin?" You have the opportunity to meet interesting people and possibly make a decent photo for your efforts.
