Great work by the members who worked yesterday. They ended their shift with 20 calls for service, including a working building fire and several serious medical calls.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the fire.
We would like to thank all of the mutual aid companies and individuals who assisted during the incident, specifically those at Southbridge Tire and the many great Southbridge residents who stepped up to help. Yesterday was another example of how fortunate we are to have a strong working relationship with the Southbridge Police Department, who assisted us above and beyond. Thank you as well to the career members of Local 2194 who returned to duty and continue to show their loyalty to the town.
The photo below shows the Fire Chaplain stepping in to help man a line, and we are grateful for the extra hands when they are needed.
This is the reality of operating with a minimum staffing of five members. When calls stack up and a working fire occurs, every available person becomes critical to the operation.
Is it common for a police officer and a fire chaplain to manage a master stream flowing over 250 gallons per minute—the largest handline we have?
While we are thankful for the Chaplain’s assistance yesterday, the Chaplain’s role is to provide emotional and spiritual support to people who have just lost everything. Police officers are there for traffic control, crowd management, and overall scene safety.
The police officer and fire chaplain should not be taken away from the duties mentioned above to fight fire.
