Eight signs you’re a badass.
None of them are loud.

Last week, I attended the Rise Up Satellite Luncheon Celebrating Successes in Ensuring Access to and Equity in Reproductive Care for All, alongside Rise Up for Breast Cancer,at a table hosted by Hilary Newsom.
The day was inspiring, hopeful, and devastating. We heard stories of women who nearly died—or did die—from ectopic pregnancies when lifesaving care wasn’t available. One of those stories was mine, decades ago. I survived because doctors were allowed to act. I lost that pregnancy, but I lived—and later had my daughter.
One slide stopped the room cold: “Eight signs you are indeed a badass.”
Not swagger. Not fearlessness.
Saying yes before you know how.
Speaking up.
Living by your own code.
Not quitting.
That felt like the throughline of the day.
Nearby, breast cancer research conferences were unfolding—rooms full of doctors and scientists quietly doing the work. And on stage, Laura Esserman sang with one of the honorees. No polish. Just presence.
She was my doctor. Her nurse caught my cancer early. I owe my life—more than once—to science, advocacy, and people who refuse to step back.

Courage doesn’t always look dramatic.
Sometimes it looks like research.
Sometimes it looks like care.
Sometimes it looks like showing up—again and again.
That’s what stayed with me. I’m deeply grateful to Hillary Newsom and Governor Gavin Newsom for their courage and continued support of both reproductive rights and breast cancer research—support that protects lives, families, and futures.

Wow! I am so thankful to know such generous and thoughtful people. Thanks to all of you for your donations and supportive comments especially at a time when there are so many other issues to get behind

I am proud to say that you all made Eva and I one of the top fund raisers for this event, raising over $2,000!

Recap of the day:

I woke at 5:30am in the pitch dark and had to go wake Eva ( who had just gotten home from her evening out, just a few hours before.)

We bundled up in our matching pink hoodie sweatshirts, and grabbed our pink ponchos to ready for the predicted rain and jumped in the car to make our way across the Golden Gate Bridge to the city. The dawn was just starting to break.

As we arrived at the Ferry building in SF, the sun was rising. Eva’s spirits immediately lifted.

We joined the pink group, sipped coffee and shared stories. We rallied and had photos taken in front of the huge temporary breast cancer statue in front of the Ferry Plaza. Eva and I were charmed as we heard many people get excited for our group photo to be taken by a “professional photographer” using a drone camera!

As the race started off there were many cheers and support. Eva and I lagged behind, taking photos as we do. Along the way, Eva discovered a very large Monarch butterfly all but squished on the the sidewalk. She gathered it up and carried it (under her rain poncho when the rain started) most of the way. Upon finding a butterfly bush offering some shelter from the rain, she felt comfortable letting it off. We both felt it was a sign and it made us feel even better about our walk, even though we trailed in last.

What really was uplifting was hearing the survivor’s stories, and also seeing all of your generosity! Thanks to all! XOX Leigh and Eva.

Quick update- and no pressure. Eva and I are doing a Breast Cancer run this weekend in SF ( in the rain 😩). There is a fund raising component to it and we have a direct link to our page if you want to donate! I do think it is important to keep research going on this and now with all the budget cuts, important to fundraise on a private level. Feel free to pass along if you have folks who feel for this cause too. Thank you!!https://runsignup.com/Race/96904/Donate/4IFeew6D6clrIMux 🎗️🎗️
