Every time that I come across a bush of Texas Rain Sage I begin to feel nostalgic. My grandma had two big bushes in the entry of the driveway growing up and I remember always being so mesmerized by it’s light green foliage and vibrant violet blooms. I feel a sense of safety when I see one, and every time that I do it feels like it embraces me. It takes me home—that sanctuary my grandma’s garden was for me. It was where I spent my most of my time, taking photos on my phone of all the flowers and knickknacks. Naturally, when I saw this bush I quickly told Julie to get into the sage and everyone around us looked at me in shock. I quickly explained that it wasn’t “that kind of sage” and that it was only called sage because it resembled it so much. I tried my best to engulf her in its foliage as if it were hugging her with the help of our friends. Really you guys, thanks for the help 😭 Y’all see a beautiful model in some bush, but I see my grandma’s garden which takes me back to that place of safety where I spent so much time alone.

One of my favorite Caravaggio paintings is “Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy” which depicts the account of this man who had a vision of a six-winged seraph (one of the higher Orders of angels) who came down to Francis in answer to his prayer that he might know both Christ's suffering and His love. At that moment he described seeing “a dazzling light as though the heavens were exploding and splashing forth all their glory in millions of waterfalls of colours and stars.” Thus, receiving the signs of the Stigmata, or the wounds left in Christ's body by the Crucifixion. If you’d like, you could look more into his account of his very supernatural encounter with God. Personally, having had several encounters with my Creator, profound ones, but perhaps not as this one yet, draws me near to this art piece. I also love the colors and how gentle and familiar the angel’s face seems to me. I find inspiration like this a lot in portraits. That safe and welcoming environment was what I was trying to depict mostly in this photo of Caleb, and it’s simply one of my favorites from that day.
