Novus contributor spotlight: Justin Mott Justin Mott

Justin is an American photojournalist who’s called Vietnam home for nearly two decades. A regular contributor to the New York Times with over 100 assignments to his name, he’s also built a commercial career shooting global campaigns across Asia — all while keeping the documentary instinct that first brought him to Hanoi.

In 2018, Sudan — the last male Northern White Rhino — died at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, leaving only two of his kind left on Earth: his daughter and granddaughter, Najin and Fatu. Justin traveled to Laikipia County to document their story as part of Kindred Guardians, his long-running project on the people who dedicate their lives to conservation. These photos follow the mother-daughter pair and the caretakers and armed guards who protect them around the clock from a poaching trade built on a myth — that rhino horn holds medicinal power. Jay is a creative director & photographer whose work blends the honesty of photojournalism with a cinematic eye for portraiture. His years as a Los Angeles Times staff photographer shaped an authentic, story-first approach — one he now brings to executive portraits for Fortune 100 companies and award-season campaigns for studios like Warner Bros., Disney, Amazon MGM Studios, and Neon Rated.

A regular presence at Sundance, TIFF, and Comic-Con, Jay works closely with marketing and publicity teams to shape creative strategy and visual direction. Beyond his mastery of lighting and technique, Jay’s real secret weapon is his personality. He brings an animated, encouraging energy on set that gets the best out of everyone in front of the lens, from A-list talent to athletes to everyday people with stories to tell. Novus contributor spotlight: Deanne Fitzmaurice Deanne Fitzmaurice

Deanne has spent her career finding the human moment inside the bigger story — work that earned her a Pulitzer, as well as numerous honors including a United Nations International Photographic Council Achievement Award and recognition from the American Photography AI-AP and Pictures of the Year. Her work has appeared in the pages of National Geographic, TIME, and Sports Illustrated. She’s a Nikon Ambassador and a co-founder of Think Tank Photo.

We’re hiring! Camera Assistant & Equipment Manager

Novus Select is looking for a detail-obsessed, technically sharp Camera Assistant & Equipment Manager to join our crew. This a full-time position based in South Lake Tahoe, California.

This position is primarily responsible for serving as a first AC on location with various cinema camera systems (Arri, Red, Sony, Nikon). The position also includes independently overseeing a robust equipment inventory (video, photo, Grip & Electric), device management for commercial products, and handling various day-to-day operations.

This is a full-time, office-based role in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, with ~20% travel for productions throughout the year. Full benefits including healthcare and 401(k), and real work-life balance — plus a dynamic, tight-knit team that collaborates across every part of the production process.

Three heads, a few suction cups, and one quick-and-dirty hood mount. It may not look pretty, but it got the job done! The best rigs always involve equal parts engineering and talking about the best way to do it. And Bligh Gillies, Mike Okimoto, and Pablo Durana are three of the best in the business for making these quick and dirty rigs work!

The true unsung hero of every production is the PA keeping the coolers stocked. And make no mistake — that PA is being evaluated by the crew. Variety, depth, rotation, and temperature of what is in these coolers is being tracked by everyone. The final creative deliverable actually depends on the quality of the contents of these coolers.

PA’s, take note: If you want a future in this industry, forget film school. Focus on building the best coolers possible.
