Meet the Tiger Flower! This is a species within the Iridaceae or Iris family. Known as Tigridia pavonia, this species of iris is hardy, beautiful, and nearly disease resistant.

A close up of the flower of the Red Orchid Cactus. Zygomatic in nature, or asymmetrical, the fleshy petals are precursor to the fruits that follow. The Red Orchid cactus is found specifically in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Veracruz.

A gorgeous flowering specimen of the Red Orchid Cactus. Growing at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory at Como Park, this Disocactus is happy. The flowers are Zygomorphic, or asymmetrical, and bloom only during the day.

Disocactus ackermannii, or Red Orchid Cactus is a gorgeous species of Disocactus. Disocactus are a genus of epiphytic (grows on other plants) and lithophytic (grows on rocks) plants that have air roots and is native to Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

Osterspermum, a member of the tribe of Calenduleae, and a member of the Asteraceae family, this is also known as the African daisy or the dasiybush. I’m drawn to the striking colors of the flowers and their radial spray of petals.

Honeysuckles are largely native to China, with the family Caprifoliaceae representing in both hemispheres. The Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera mackii), pictured here is an invasive species in North America. It chokes out native plants and blooms before the others can in the spring. It’s also the last to die in the fall, giving it an evolutionary advantage.

Amur Honeysuckle (Lonicera mackii) is a notorious plant. I personally cut it out and dig it up when I come across it. But here I’m in a public park, and there are limitations. I also wanted to stop and appreciate the beauty in the pink flowers this one has.

Some more horsetail (Equisetum arvense) along the road here in a muggy part of the ditch. It’s known as a candock plant, or a plant that grows near water. To me, it’s also a fossil, alive and well like a Colecanth in the 21st century. This plant is also rumored to have been the inspiration for John Napier and logarithms due to the segmentation of the plant- which I dug into and could only locate a New Yorker article on it. So believe if you do, I leave that up to you dear viewer
