The end of August is here. The days are a little shorter and cooler. The peak summer blooms have faded and I find myself mourning their loss.

Ironically, it wasn’t that long ago that I was desperately waiting for the lobelias to bloom and the raspberries to ripen. And just like that, that time is now.

I will try my best to savor this phase while also anxiously awaiting the next few. It’s both one of the joys and one of the hardest parts of gardening, to appreciate each moment without wishing it away for the next.

And yet, it still isn’t over.

The garden still has a few more shows to put on.

We have 3 different types of milkweed in our yard (butterfly, swamp, and common) and all are in bloom!

Milkweeds are the only larval host plant for the Monarch butterfly.

Butterfly W**d (Asclepias tuberosa) forms a compact clump (2 ft) and has showy orange flowers. Fits very well in a garden bed and likes full to part sun and medium to dry soil. Spreads only by seed so can be controlled by simply removing the seed pods in the fall.

Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) sends up tall shoots (4ft) so it works well in the back of a flower bed. It can have white or purple flowers and also only spreads via seed.

Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) grows to be about 3 ft tall and has very fragrant pinkish blooms. This species spreads via rhizomes and can get a bit aggressive for a typical flower bed. Great for wildflower meadows or large areas where it can spread freely.

Happy Fourth of July! A little red, white, and blue from around the yard.

Summer is here and with it comes the next wave of blooms!

Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) are a biennial who like full to partial sun, drought tolerant, and have gorgeous yellow flowers. They are prolific self seeders and are also the larval host plant for the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly. Bonus points - once they are done blooming, the seeds become food for finches.
