Nature's Stage

A new one is up on the blog:

Above the fog or in the soup?
The difference is often not the weather. It is your elevation.

Wish you could more reliably predict fog?

Visibility is a lagging indicator—it tells you fog is already there. If you want more fog photos, you have to track what causes it.

Dew point spread, wind, and overnight clearing—tell the real story.

I broke down how to read them and stack the odds in your favor in my blog post (check bio).

Fog is a technical puzzle. Chasing it shouldn't be.

Is there anything more transformative than a morning lost in the fog? The problem is that predicting those conditions is notoriously difficult. Standard weather apps force you to manually check each location, and NWS fog advisories tell you if it’s dangerous to drive; they don’t tell you if it’s beautiful to shoot.

I spent months analyzing weather patterns and coding a custom algorithm to solve this for my own work. Fog-Index is now live. It tracks 15+ variables across 3 weather models to give you a clear probability score days in advance.

Built for the obsessed. Live now at Fog-Index.com.
I’m open to your feedback and suggestions as we refine the model.

Refuge of the Oak

The healing power of nature is real. I recently ventured out with my friend John, and he shared a landscape so beautiful it stopped me in my tracks. I almost forgot how sweet this kind of exploration is.

We found great fall color and the prescribed burns in the area subbed in for fog to add some atmosphere.

This entire series comes from an unforgettable experience exploring a gorge overflowing with my favorite tree: the mighty oak.

Over the next few posts, I’ll be sharing more images that I hope capture the raw beauty of this hidden pocket of the PNW.

As a former diehard landscape photographer, I hadn't realized all of the creative possibilities available within wildlife and bird photography.

I'm a newb in these genres but I've been having a lot of fun with it, and gearing up for a family trip to Costa Rica later this year.

Sauvie Island, one of the country's largest river islands, sits where the Willamette and Columbia rivers meet. Its northern half is a vast wildlife area that serves as a critical stopover on the Pacific Flyway, offering rest and food for tens of thousands of migrating waterfowl like Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese.

The island's ecological heart is Sturgeon Lake, a shallow basin whose water level pulses with the Columbia River. This seasonal flooding creates a dynamic, nutrient-rich wetland habitat of mudflats and shallows essential for birds and fish.

The area also supports significant stands of Oregon Ash, a unique tree species adapted to survive months of winter flooding. These rare forested wetlands are now under direct threat from the invasive Emerald Ash Borer.
