How would you like to live in an isolated island lighthouse? Would the silence and seclusion be a much appreciated respite from the drone of humanity or something to be escaped?

I love this lighthouse and the island it rests on. I find myself spending a day or two here whenever I can, even though it is a journey to get here. The first photo is of the setting sun over the lighthouse, and the second is a long exposure, capturing the very last light of the day.

A throwback to this last summer...

Johnston ridge observatory at Mt. St Helens has been inaccessible by car for over a year. However, you can still get there by hiking up the Boundary Trail, a climb of about 2,000 feet and over 5 miles. Shuping, , and I did this hike weighed down with camera gear. Evening and dawn colors were amazing, with Helens and surrounding landscape lit up by the golden light. It took some effort to get there, but it was worth it.

I was out for a few days on a kayak trip in the San Juan Islands of Washington State in October. This is a fantastically beautiful archipelago of small islands you can tour by kayak or boat. It is close enough to where I live, that I go there often, and carry my camera gear in my kayak. Ok, I go there mainly to relax, but I take photo opportunities when they arise.

I captured these Larch trees last fall around a pristine lake in the North Cascades. This is a pre-dawn photo, and if the photo looks cold to you, that would accurate. Overnight temperatures are below freezing in the mountains during the fall months.

This is another shot captured with the 50mm f1.2 prime lens I mentioned a couple posts ago. We were pretty far away from the mountain, so the longer focal length really helped to bring this in for a more intimate capture. I had waited for close alignment between the milky way and Mt. Baker peak to bring out this lens, but there was also some smoke blowing in from a nearby wildfire. You can see the haze around the peak, and it reflects some of the light pollution. I've been trying to figure out if haze helps this composition...

An early morning view of Mount Rainier.

Rainier is beautiful from any direction. Sunset, sunrise or night, it is one of my favorite places to photograph in the Pacific Northwest.

Ever wonder why the night sky isn't bright white? Maybe you haven't but physicists have pondered this question. With the glow created by the big bang, starbirth and supernovae, the sky should be a dazzling bright white. However, the ever-expanding universe has red shifted most of this visible light to longer wavelengths, only observable by radio telescopes.

I captured this image over Mount Rainier using a 50mm f1.2 lens. Maybe not the go-too focal length of night sky photographers, but I really like the definition this lens captured in the stars. You can even see gas clouds and nebula in this image.

It isn't very often that you are able to capture the aurora with the Milky Way this far south. I've been waiting for another incredible night like this one back in May, but no luck yet.
