Last summer I had the honor of flying to Colorado to document Chris and Max’s wedding. Since I was heading into unfamiliar territory for their special day, I gifted them rehearsal coverage.

Oh man, I was glad I did! I got to meet their incredible officiant and venue coordinator. And most importantly, we all walked through their ceremony together. I noticed that there would be ample room behind the couple, so I asked the officiant and the couple if I could stand there for their first kiss. They all said “Absolutely!” and I pre-envisioned this exact composition.

During the wedding ceremony, I knew exactly when the officiant would step aside and I took her spot. I was NERVOUS but I grounded myself to see the couple and frame them perfectly in the aisle to show as many guest expressions as possible.

I’m super proud of this one.

I took a risk on this photo, and it paid off. Here’s the backstory:

For the images right before this I used my flash. But I noticed that the light coming from the neon sign was pretty strong and I was curious if it was strong enough to light them as silhouettes. I made a split second judgement to turn off my flash at the same time as Max spontaneously decided to smash a bit of cake for Chris! I had a moment of panic because I didn’t take a test shot since it was an unplanned moment and I didn’t even know if I had a good exposure. The risk paid off as the backlighting was enough to light each of their expressions (Max’s joy and Chris’s surprise) as well as a tiny crumb.

I adore this image because it has the 3 components of a killer image: composition, lighting, and moment. And I’m happy to share that the awarded this photo a gold medallion💛

Chrissy and Aaron had one of my favorite ❤️recessionals at the end of their wedding ceremony! It was such a joyful celebration and I loved the dried floral toss

Chrissy’s one request was for me to get a “peek-inside” photo from the atrium of Springwood Manor during the last dance at the end of their wedding. I especially love seeing Aaron’s suit jacket hanging on a chair in the background of the last photo🖤

Can you spot the difference between these documentary style and lifestyle family photos?

The documentary style photos typically involve imperfect light and might only show a few family members at a time. This also means I go silent (or maybe I say things like “THIS IS AMAZING”) and simply record and witness what unfolds in front of me, but it shines when documenting the best unpredictable moments.

The lifestyle photos show the full family with genuine, relaxed smiles in flattering light. These photos were gently guided by my verbal direction.

Which do you like better?

Don’t mind me, I’m just over here reminiscing about Brittany and Charles’ night session as we danced down Smallman Street.

I loved how the rain lit up the pavement in the night—a trick commonly done in movies! The next time you watch a night scene in a movie, pay attention to the street. Notice how it’s always wet? It’s because they hose it down between takes.

All caps😌

Much love to Kelly of for reworking my logo. My former logo was a quirky mismatch of upper case and lower case letters, so when I went to her to update my name, we initially discussed incorporating greens, a sun graphic, and joyful swirls into the design. But then I said “Actually, it’s perfect as is.”

Because it’s me, my most authentic self, all caps.
