It's Waterfall Wednesday and to celebrate let's take a visit to Amos Falls, a beautiful off trail waterfall in Whitley County, Kentucky. This photo was taken on a visit with my good friend Jeff Burcher back in spring of 2019. This falls had been on my list for years and it was great to finally knock it off my list. I really want to get back there because some new comps have opened up for some great shots. Hoping to get out this weekend, though I'm not so sure Amos will be on the list. Looking forward to a break and getting back to nature.

It's Waterfall Wednesday and for this week's edition I thought I would share one of my favorite waterfall photos! Snagged this unusual perspective of Cedar Cliff Falls in Cedarville, Ohio while they were installing a new boardwalk to the falls. Though manmade, this 40 foot tall waterfall is a real stunner.

Well, Arch Awareness is over and I'm still getting caught up on submissions to the database. Though I'm hip deep in data it's Waterfall Wednesday so it's time for a waterfall! A couple weekends ago my good friend Christopher Morris and I spent a 3 day weekend at the Freedom Falls Cabin in Wolfe County. Amazingly, as the crow flies, a stones throw from Red Point BBQ . This cabin sits about 300 feet downstream from a 41.5 foot tall waterfall and it's visible right out the back windows. We spent most of the weekend sitting in the cabin working on the arch and waterfall databases, drinking Weller Special Reserve and looking up at the waterfall often. It was incredibly therapeutic for me. We only left the cabin to eat at Red Point and to visit and document the waterfall just upstream from Freedom Falls. Though we had a great time, lighting was terrible and so far none of this trips photographs of the falls at the cabin I have been satisfied with. Hopefully one or two came out of Upper Freedom Falls. Luckily this was not my first visit to this cabin as I had visited back in March of 2020 and got some great shots of the falls. Not only is the falls awesome but the cabin in one of the best I've stayed at over the years. Check out the comments if you'd like to learn more about this sweet cabin and it's incredible waterfall. You will not regret your stay.

February is Arch Awareness Month over on the Kentucky Waterfalls, Arches and Landscapes group where I work to teach people about all the incredible arches in the state of Kentucky. This is pretty time consuming and eats up a lot of time on my Fultz Fotos page. Hopefully I'll be able to mix between the two but Arch Awareness will have to take precedent. To celebrate I thought I would share what is probably my favorite all time arch photo which is of Split Bow Arch in the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area. Taken in spring of 2017 I couldn't believe the light when we arrived and I thought I would try something new this worms eye view. When I picked my camera up off the ground I knew I had really captured the beauty and size of the arch. Now I need to pay a visit in the snow!

With this extended deep freeze I have a feeling there's some ice cones forming at the waterfalls so I figured I'd share a photo of Broke Leg Falls when it was forming a cone. This was on a great adventure with my life long friend Nathan Schertler that included stops by Whittleton Arch and Creation Falls. This photo was taken in my early days as a photographer, in fact it was taken 15 years ago tomorrow. Also, this photo was taken before the tornado hit Broke Leg Falls. As this freeze continues I would expect you'll see full frozen waterfalls throughout the region.

Something a little different tonight, a couple months ago I did an interview with the Adventure Sports Podcast about my work with the Kentucky Arch and Waterfall Databases and my Fultz Fotos Photography. This was my first ever podcast interview and I have to say it was a lot of fun and a learning experience! I figured some of you all might be interested in listening. I only screwed up once and almost did again but corrected myself. If you know the databases you'll know where I screwed up, and if you don't then you'll just enjoy learning about Kentucky's arches and waterfalls and Fultz Fotos. Besides Youtube you can listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Red Circle, Podcast Republic and Player FM or on their website.

I'm reading that Kentucky's going to get a lot of snow this weekend if this weather system pans out so I thought I'd share what is one of my all time favorite photos that I've taken which was from Lookout Point in Kentucky's Natural Bridge State Park after a major snow event. I like snow as much as fall foliage season when it comes to landscape photography and there's nothing like a hike in the woods after a fresh snowfall. Interesting tidbit, this is a color photograph.

If you’ve been following this page enough you know I love me some waterfalls with arches and today for Waterfall Wednesday I figured I’d share this beauty. Located in eastern Kentucky this waterfall was documented last year by Scot Turner who submitted it to the Kentucky Arch Database, which I am also an administrator for. Late last winter myself and good friend and fellow KY Arches Database admin Christopher Morris were in the area following up on an arch submission that appeared to have some petroglyphs at it. We made this natural bridge our first stop of the day and boy were we glad we did because before long the sun would bust out for a bright contrasty day. Well below freezing temps overnight, a fresh snowfall and some morning thick cloud cover really made for a beautiful scene with a partially frozen waterfall and everything covered in white. With an opening of 27 feet long and 4 ½ feet high this was one of the best new discoveries in the state last year. To top it off there’s a 15 foot tall waterfall just beyond the bridge and though it wasn’t flowing well this day I hope to swing by and nab a shot of the falls in all it’s glory. For now I’m just going to have to settle for this photograph of a lovely frozen natural bridge.

Since Kingdom Come State Park let the cat out of the bag on social media yesterday I figured I could share one of my favorite arches, one that I've never posted on my Fultz Fotos page and have only shared one photograph on my personal page. I visited this beauty back in November of 2024 and I'll have to admit it immediately became one of my all time favorite arches. Technically a natural bridge, there's not an arch like it in the state and honestly, I'd love to catch it with water actually flowing under it. The bridge is at a 60 degree angle and is 17 feet long and 8 feet high and to make it even more interesting there's a shelf arch further down from it. Further proof that Kentucky is a land of unique landforms.

It's been a busy holiday season here and I'm finally finding a little time to share a post. I hope everyone had a great end to the old year and start to the new. I finally did get out to do some shooting this weekend in the Frankfort, Kentucky area and I am looking forward to taking a closer look at those photographs. Meanwhile let's pay a visit to one of my favorite low flow waterfalls Dog Branch School Falls in Laurel County, KY. I have a tendency to stop by this one when driving into the area to see how waterflow is. If this falls is flowing so are the rest. My good friend Leo and I stopped by here on a cold January morning, and I don't think I could have asked for better conditions.
