Eagles are one of those animals that I think we can all agree are fun to watch.

One of the questions I get asked most often is, "Where can I go see wildlife?" Unfortunately, the answer is usually complicated. A big part of my job involves going to places most people have never heard of and spending long stretches of time waiting for something to happen.

But, the Lewis and Clark Dam in Yankton is one of those places. You can pull up, fish if you'd like, enjoy a snack, and watch bald eagles do their morning fishing. It's a pretty great way to spend a morning.

I love cardinals because they’re one of those birds that almost everyone recognizes. They can fade into the background of everyday life, but the moment you bring them up, people light up and start sharing stories. For many, they symbolize loved ones who have passed, which is one of the reasons they resonate so deeply and why I love displaying them at shows.

Like any familiar subject, though, the challenge is finding a new way to see it. Instead of focusing on the bright red feathers everyone expects, I went with a different, a simple black-and-white silhouette in the middle of a call.

One of my favorite techniques in photography is taking a couple of meaningful elements and bringing them together to create a stronger story.

If you're from southeastern South Dakota, you'll probably recognize this landmark. The challenge isn't finding things to photograph, it's finding the right combination of subjects and then waiting for the moment when everything comes together.
