This past weekend I had a chance to attend the NE FIRST District Championship in Springfield, MA. (It’s a robotics competition for high school students.)

I was able to spend some time working on my Volunteers project, where I focus on the volunteers who take time out of their lives to help others and support causes important to them. (Full disclosure, I serve on the Board of Directors for NE FIRST, and have been involved with FIRST for nearly 30 years.)

The Event Photographers are there to capture and preserve the memories made by our teams, mentors, and volunteers. There are hundreds if not thousands of stories at every NE FIRST event. I have a special place in my heart for this team, as they allow me to join them each year to help tell the story of the NE FIRST and share it with so many others.

The Event Volunteers work to make sure the FIRST events run efficiently and smoothly, and can quickly resolve any problem that pops up. From event leadership, to judges, to referees, to field operations and support. Without our event volunteers, we will have a line of robots waiting, with no place to compete.

The Mentors are the key component to any FIRST team. They bring their experience and passion to the students, helping them design and build their robots. Mentors come from all sorts of backgrounds - engineering, education, business, operations, finance, and more.

The Emcees manage the competition fields, introducing the teams and keeping the audience engaged. Each Emcee has developed their own on field personality and style. Many of our Emcees are former FIRST students.

It was a difficult weekend for the three teams competing in the Connecticut Cup finals. While the three teams (U12 Girls Inferno, U15 Boys Fury, and U17 Senior Boys), all played extremely well with some amazing plays, they each came up short in the end. They left nothing behind on the pitch, and each had an amazing season.
I am working on your galleries now, and hope to have them ready shortly. You should be receiving a message from your coach and/or manager with information on how to access the galleries. Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you all back on the pitch in the fall. Feel free to reach out to discuss coverage for your team or athlete.

Last weekend, U13 Cyclones took the co-championship in their division at the Newtown Memorial Day Tournament. And this weekend, they beat West Hartford 2-1 in league play. Great job boys!

Sharing some more pictures from this past weekend’s FIRST Robotics Competition District Championship. Everyone involved in FIRST has such a passion for the program, and the student participants. The level of sportsmanship is greater than I have seen at all types and levels of competition. These students, mentors, and volunteers get it!

Congratulations to all the teams competing in this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition District Championship! Thank you to the students, mentors, and volunteers for letting me capture the energy, excitement, and diversity that make FIRST such an amazing program. Best of luck to those New England teams moving on to the World Championship in Houston.
Mentors and volunteers throughout New England help provide the support necessary for the NE FIRST teams and events. These are just a few of the hundreds of mentors and volunteers in the NE FIRST community.
