The Birth of Wade | The Rock Family

It is always my goal in every birth to arrive early rather than “just in time”. I would rather sit patiently for 6 hours than rush and make it with minutes to spare. And I certainly never ever want to miss a moment of my clients’ active labors. But the nature of birth and its unpredictability means that sometimes, birthworkers don’t arrive before the baby does. Sometimes, baby has their own plan and needs.

This birth was one of those rare times. The midwife made it just in time for the birth itself, and the rest of us arrived shortly after. But in this case it is hard to complain too much when I received what I did as a result. Daniel grabbed Jordan’s camera and recorded the 20 minutes leading up to Wade’s whirlwind birth from whatever perspective he could while being so supportive of his amazing wife and joyfully overwhelmed by the birth of his son. There is something about it all that is so beautiful and tender - the glow when Jordan looks to Daniel while holding their baby, a look so honest and full of the joy that only partners can share. When I arrived, mama had just moved to her bed, the cord still pumping the last of its precious life force into baby before completing its mission forever. Jordan’s face was still so bright with empowerment and disbelief at the whirlwind she just experienced. The big sisters were gushing over their new brother. And dad hovered quietly, as if he never wanted to look away or miss a moment of it.

These first few moments. These first few days. The happy chaos, the basking in the vibrating glow of a soul still fresh from the beyond. The gaze of loved ones who memorize this new and yet familiar face. The relief of a birth journey completed. The sound of a newborn at his mother’s breast. Of siblings tumbling away and towards. The quiet calm of a house cloistered away for a time, as they relearn who they are with this new addition to their tapestry threads. A pattern as old as life itself. And the honor of being invited into this space is never, ever lost on me. ❤️

Watching a goddess dig deep.

“Find your center,” her midwife murmurs.

“I’m shaking...I can’t do this,” she whispers.

“Yes, you can.” Her midwife of many years repeats the words she already knows so well. “This is expected. You’ve done this before. The transition is coming. Ride the wave. Find your center.” The lights lowered, the room quieted. Her midwife facilitates the journey.

“Ride the wave,” she reminds herself. She finds her center. Deep, deep within. She finds herself, her strength, her peace.

And she steps back into the waves.

It’s about time for an introduction for all the new folks! :) Hi, I’m Kristen Bowyer.

I live in NWA - i.e. Northwest Arkansas for the uninitiated.

My entire life I've been a curator of stories, of beautiful, heartfelt narratives.

Well written stories truly saved my life in ways I carry close to my heart.

I'm also obsessed with birth and everything about it. From before the conception of the new soul to the "4th trimester" and beyond, you'll never find me unwilling to sit and listen and learn and share. Never not on a high after attending another stunning demonstration of the strength, resilience, beauty, and bad-ass-ery of a mother's labor and birth.

I'm a mom of 3 (two earthside and one angel). Wife to the sexiest, most supportive guy alive. A homesteader-to-be. Gardener. Fermenter. Lover of orcas and mustangs and jersey cows and bees. Fan of a well-brewed BPA and Dark & Stormies. Fantasy nerd of the highest degree. The OG holistic, natural lifestyle advocate (been this way since 14, yo). Enneagram 6w5. I only love the cold if there's also snow.
